Hello I just recently bought a nice 36 5W out of Nebraska. Its really clean but I dont know if its a Standard or a Deluxe. Here is what it has. It has 2 taillights, waterfall dash, ashtray, duel type guages (fuel/oil etc.) roll down rear window, chrome or stainless windshield frame. But here is what doesn't add up. It has standard garnish molding and steering wheel and the rear windows are fixed like a early standard would possibly have. The dash and all the molding is painted Washinton blue so i can't tell if it was a type of woodgrain. Also the vin tag is missing on the firewall. Is there anyway to tell what this car was originally??????
rear windows were fixed on '36s - none of them had roll down rear side windows. all had duel type gauges - not sure what you mean it has std garnish moldings and std steering wheel - if you dont know if its deluxe or std how do you know what type these are? std garnish moldings did not have a decorative molding underneath them, deluxe models did. boith std models and deluxe models had the same garnish molding colours. inside handles or deluxe cars had taupe knobs on them, std cars just had nickel plated handles. deluxe models had inside arms rests, std models did not. waterfall was only in deluxe cars and a walnut grained dash
rear side windows were available in swing out or fixed. Deluxe garnish molding had decorative molding added under the garnish molding. Not sure if it was a seperate piece or was one with the garnish. There was a standard steering wheel and a Banjo type on the deluxes.
sorry rear windows on a 36 were never offered as swing out or roll back type in a 5w coupe - this was only an option on the fordor sedan decorative molding is an additional piece and is not part of the garnish molding.
not sure if the added garnish is just missing and someone replaced the steering wheel and rear side windows
yes , 1/4 windows never opened. i can't tell by your description , does the rear window roll up/down?
deluxe models had curved outside door handles, std models had straight/fatish door handles, deulxe cars normally had a chrome windshield surround also deluxe grille shell was normally chrome plated, std grille normally painted body colour. I would say its a std model '36 because the garnish moldings are body colour, std steering wheel, std looking handles on the outside etc.
Sounds like a deluxe that the banjo wheel was replaced, and the deluxe moldings went MIA when the interior was redone. '36s never had opening side windows, or a vin tag, so no way to tell what was original, other than looking at what looks stock, and what looks to have been added later.
Well I know that rear quarter windows did tilt out on some of the 36's mostly deluxes. Also some had body number tags on the firewall like this one used to have but is missing. Man i dont know. The garnish molding was repainted for sure probably the same time as the dash. The grill isnt painted either. But weemark has a point about the door handles. but curved ones didnt come out til Janurary. I have to read the numbers on the frame and see when it was made.
Already have it! thats where im getting my info. Its just hard to decide what I have as its 50% standard and 50% deluxe
the rear 1/4 windows didnt open on 5w cars - they only opened on fordor sedans, ive got the restoration book here and thats what it says - look at page 14 the diagrams/txt are only for cars which have 4 doors. ive access to about 7 '36 5w cars and none of them have had rear opening windows. there was a lot of changes made in May 1936 to certain parts so it might be hard to pin down exactly what it was. if you want to know for sure go over to www.fordbarn.com and ask there, lots of people with lots of knowledge there.
Does your glovebox lock? Standards do not while Deluxe has a chrome handle that locks. These guys are right, the rear quarter window did NOT open on a coupe. Only the 4 door sedan. '35s slide back and '36 opens out. Your spare tire could go either way, as they didn't change to Standard/Deluxe until late '36. BTW, I've haven't seen a late standard cover in years.
AHHH I see I didnt read that right on page 14. My fault. Didnt see where it said Fordor. I have to check the glove box. Its in the trunk Well Its a standard it does not have the locking box. Actually all there was two holes in it for a handle. I snapped a few pictures while I was out there. I found out it was built in late Feburary. Man I have alot of work to do!
Hey adam, if it's a hot rod, it don't matter if it's standard or deluxe! It's Standaluxe! Drive the **** out of it! Lot of work! What!? slap that new carb on there and let's go.
Not sure about 37 but I know it has it for 36. Ace It going to take a little more work than that. Have to go through the juice brakes and suspension and recore the radiator and redo the wiring. The wiring is a mess! The fuel system is nothing but varnish too! Hasn't ran since 82 Fun Fun!!!
Now I'm confused, I thought mine was a deluxe but now I'm wondering. roll down window in the rear etc but only one tail light and no locking glove box. Now I'm curious. At least the radio still works, LOL.
Two windshield wipers was a extra accessory. Could come with either the standard or Deluxe. The running board molding was only available on Deluxe touring sedans (tudor & Fordor), and convertible sedans. Deluxes also had armrests on the drivers side. I thought the deluxes had two taillights but im not positive
Delmo the rolling rear window was available to all coupes and the locking glove box wasnt available til march so it all depends on when yours was made.
the car has been changed so much from original with its juice brakes, 59AB swap, different interior etc. etc. etc. it doesnt matter if it was a deluxe car or std. its only restorers who worry bout these things.
One time I was out in my the coupe and this guy (who is about my parent's age) comes up and starts grilling me. I had already seen his super nice stock '35 coupe. "you know this car isn't a Deluxe" It's been in my family for 44 years, so I can ***ure you that it is. "The dash is wrong. It should be woodgrained not painted. That makes it a Standard." Yes, the dash was painted by my father 25 years ago. It was originally woodgrained. "The windshield shouldn't be chrome, it should be painted on a Standard." You're right, it's a Deluxe. "Those are the original running boards. Did you know that?" Why yes I did since they've been on the car for the past 44 years... "See all the holes, that makes them original" Yes, I know... "That glove box is wrong for a Standard. It shouldn't have the key hole" You're right, it's a Deluxe. At this point he gets a phone call and excuses himself. His wife who has seen this going on walks over and chuckles... "my husband knows alot about these old cars, and it looks like you do too!" Hahaha!
