Are there certain tanks that work and some that don't? I drove buy an aviation place the other day and they have stacks of tanks but I'm not sure of dimensions or whether or they would work. I have no intention of building one but if there is interest I can go in and see why they have so many and if they are for sale.
i just picked up a couple of 'jet' tanks; larger than is customary, but a 6-71 blower atop a big-block will fit neatly inside, & it's really smoooth + pointy!... If it's what you want, You'll 'just KNOW'; these thingies are 100% custom. Build your heart's desire, as nobody else can quite understand. (even those engaged in their own have a unique take on 'perfection')
Here is mine.......it was on a 1944 F4U Corsair, and its steel so I can weld it easily with my limited welding capability
It is possible to build almost any tank, but from what I've learned with ours It'd be nice to have a length of about 13+ feet and a diameter approaching 30 inches.
Holy cow. I thought all the wing tanks were long gone. Where do you find them, and how much do they cost?
Theyre won't be anybody there to get more information but when I go to work in a few hours I'll stop and take some pics.
Ok now you started something!! If you have an extra one, please let me know. Good luck, Happy Thanksgiving to all. BayDog
I got closer and saw they all appeared to be fiberglass or some other wound material. One tag I saw said Fibertech or something.
you need at least 30" in diameter I would say. The bigger the better. You'll quickly Find out what is to small. When you can't fit anything else In it besides the motor. We have some aluminum tanks and fiberglass p-38 tanks for sale at my shop. Contact Bobby or me.... Lucky
Here's Ron Richardson's tank built with a Rod 'n Race 20" extended P-38 tank with the special flat bottom like the SoCal tank form the 50's. P-38's are 36" at the fat point and as has been mentioned, you need every cubic inch of area to build a race legal tank today. The fellow in England who just posted his new 20" tank will have one hell of a time fitting everything inside. The last shot just popped up on the Drag Cars in Motion thread. Mid 50's drag car from Texas which may have never seen the Salt Flats.
