Do these wheels make my ass look fat? Pics.....

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rocky, Aug 7, 2004.

  1. I've been bustin ass to get ready for a mega road trip in my ancient poncho. Some of the stuff I did was to have a pair of 15 inch and 16 inch wheels powdercoated white and mounted up new radials on 'em. Yeah, yeah, I already know some of you'se guys won't run a radial tire on your hot rods but this front end is really loose. I have a nova sub for it later but right now I don't have time to swap or repair this suspension before I leave.
I used the gi-gundo rear tires to gain some gear for the interstate driving I'll be doing from Omaha to Wendover and then to the HAMB drags before driving it home again. I realize the car would sit lower in the rear with shorter tires but it ain't gonna happen. And I can't lower it any more or I'll have clearance issues.
Should I run these wheels and tires or go back to my short chrome wheels and black tires and chance hurting the motor?
Right now, the car hums along with 60-65 mph traffic without breaking a sweat...

  2. side view........

  3. The old chromies looked like this. This was before I slipped the 3" blocks in the rear today...

  4. I like they way thoses look on your poncho.

I like the white ones. Now you just need a sticker on the back window that say's "I'm not speeding, I am just qualifying. Bonneville 2004"

    See you on the salt.......

    Chris

Also, could you stripe a thin black line on the rims of the wheels to break up the white?

The white ones are the way to go.

By the way, what does it cost everybody to have a set of wheels powdercoated?

The larger diameter white wheels are clearly an improvement over the chromies. I personally like the big rubber rake too; sorta boy-racer-circa-1958.

Let me join this lovefest and say the white wheels look just right. The lower RPM (higher cruise speed) is just a bonus. Don't forget the sunscreen. [IMG]

I love the white wheels and big-'n-littles, Rocky! Chrome wheels were the late-'50s equivalent of today's billet wheels -- popular with folks who had no imagination.

Get rid of the add-on ends on the front bumper and the overriders on the rear and it'll be looking really sweet. You already have one of the best-looking taillight designs ever.

Altogether handsome car. Sure would make a great recipient for a PMD SOHC I6 with two or three 2GVs, some head work, a bit of cam, and headers. And it'd still be all in the family!

  23. Thanks all...I'll keep 'em on there and Mike...the OHC poncho 6 popper? Fagetaboudit! It ain't happening in my car. Why not the '60 starchief 389 with ram-air 3 cam, Rhoades lifters, punched 0.030 with flat tops, hei ignition and headers? This should work.

  24. The goat hoof scratches are slowly leaving too. I've been hand buffing them out with green scotchbrite pads. It's good to have a shady spot in the driveway. Hard work!
All the horizontal surfaces will have flat textures to them while the verticle surfaces will still be shiny...
I alaready did the trunk and rear fenders and now it's time for the top [gulp!] and the hood.

What a great ride. I like the big rubber, could go either way on the wheels, always liked old style(not smoothy) chromies with poverty dog dish caps.
And kudos for driving her the distance. Being there is one thing but how you get there another thing entirely. Enjoy the journey.

Run em Rocky they look good and aint store bought.

  27. The rear looks good... but the front tires look a tad too short.

Maybe go to a 65 or 70 series in the front?

BTW, the overall look is great... it'll look bitchen' going down the freeway.

    Sam.

I agree with Sam, the front could use a taller tire. Rear looks great, fills up the wheel well.
