How Wide is the Rearend in your Model A Coupe/sedan

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Chopshop13, Nov 25, 2008.

  1. As the title states.
Im trying to find a rear end for my 30 coupe but as things have played out i cant measure the widest part of my body since its in bits.
im to be running 15x8's, 4" backspaced, with 235/75r15 wide whites(cheers to those of you who replied to my last thread).

If you know the width of your rearend, you are running a 4" backspaced wheel or something similar and you have a photo of your model A, id much apreciate seeing it.
    Regards

Between the rear fender wells of the 1930 - 31 body is 42-1/2 inches.
Between the inside outer edges (that make sense?) of the rear fenders is 65 inches.

I've got a 9" out of a 79 F150. Probably same as the Bronco. It around 56" between the backing plates.

i was going to run a 9" but ended up with the rearend out of a 81 chevy c10 and it fit perfect. i bagged my 28 sedan and it sits on the ground when layed out. it has about 1 inch between tire and body when layed out. the rearend was free so i couldnt pass it up.

  8. Better go to a wider rear end... when they sit that low you're going to have clearance issues... those bodies widen out above the fenderlines quite a bit!

With 4" backspace you'd better be in the 62-64 inch range.

My roadster has 63.5" hub to hub face measurement with 5.75" wheel backspace and the tires clear by 3/4" on both sides.

I've talked to too many sedan owners that are running a stack of unsafe spacers so that the tires clear the body

I'd say mock up the body and stand the wheels and tires you're going to use in Position and then measure (if you can) inside wheel hub to inside wheel hub and then locate the rearend of that size...!

  9. Cheers, yeah i thought i might need something a bit wider than 56".

Here in NZ the viechles our diffs come from are mostly Australian Ford so i cant just go grab any old american rearend, were not spoilt for choice, and a 9" will set you back $1500NZ or about $1000US.

So at the moment im looking at a Ford XR6 rearend(late model australian performance), borg warner LSD, 3.5, disk brakes(who cares) which is 61.2" face to face.

So wingnutz thats 2.3" narower than yours or 1.15" each side, diference in wheel back space is what, 1.75 so the inside lip of the wheel would sit 0.6" further out on each side giving a total of (3/4" + 0.6") 1 and 3/8" clearance.

I could live with that. Cheers wingnut youve been a big help. do you have a picture you could post which shows your clearance?

Use 2 short axles in the XR6 rear for a 58" width rear.

    I use a stock 36 rear with mid 50's F100 wheels

  11. Will keep that in mind.
Do you know what the diference is between th xr8 and xr6 rearends?

  12. Here's the Most common shot of my car...!

Note: the rear of the car is narrower than the front and it's not as wide as a sedan that will sit lower than my roadster.

Go find a Quickchange that has a locker from a retired racer... you can put any size tube and axle in it to get the right size!

I'm putting a Maverick 8" in the sedan. Haven't got it mocked up yet, but looks like it's gonna fit perfectly.

I'm running a mid year Corvette rear end in my '30 Sedan. Not sure what I have for backspacing, but it fits well with no clearance issues.

I am running 60" wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface. I should have run 56" though. I had 15x8 American's with 4" back space and with the 60" rearend and 275X65X15's there was too much space between the body on tire...........(I like the tire tucked up close to the body) and it didn't look right. So I sold the American's and went with 16" steel wheels with 6" offset and 285X65X16 tires.

I'm starting work on a 30 A Coupe. I've been reading everything I can find. I've been measuring everything I can find too. Fenderwell to fenderwell on an 30 coupe is 42.5". The very widest part of the body near where the tires would be on a channeled car is about 48" + -. Early Mustang 8", Maverick 8", and 66-76 Bronco 9" r/e's are all about 58" to 58.5" wheel flange to wheel flange. Posies spring company web site has some good information. Page 20 of their online catalogue has axle flange & tube dimensions of many popular r/e's used in 30's cars. I hope this helps. Lucky
