I think I ended up owning a 318...How? I hate those stupid things....
    I think there's a 440 around here somewhere...but it's broke...but could probably be fixed...

Here's where my fetish comes in.

    CYLINDER HEADS.
I can't throw them away. no matter how fucked they really are, I (we) keep them.

just bare heads, in the shop right now....
    36.
and those are the ones NOT bolted to the above motors.
I know I have at least 4 sets at home (hard to find Olds/Poncho stuff)
along with several good Olds Cranks, Poncho cranks, and 1 sbc steel crank with about a 35 degree twist in it I use for laughs and to keep my shop door open. ( It reminds me of the twisted ford axle. even the unwashed notice something is horribly wrong with it.)

as far as various engine parts are concerned, I have a tallish stack of wasted Pontiac timing chain covers (as if they are gonna invent some new exciting way to weld crap aluminum tomorrow and the Kauffman ones are gonna dissappear) dozens of junk Balancers, Oil pans, Valve covers (I am looking to compete with Tman's Bale Barn, I am gonna build mine out of shitty valve covers) scads and scads of rods, pistons, unusable crankshafts (Slick 50's is in the office right next to 2 of Buzzards shattered axles) and tons of various broken shit no one can use.

I keep flywheels with missing teeth. I don't know why. They make cool bases for muffler stands, I guess...but even Midas doesn't need this many muffler stands.

christ. I need to have a garage sale.

I've been thinking that so far I've gotten through 2008 without bringing a single engine home. But back in August I drove about 50 miles to buy a "rebuilt" 241 Red Ram as well as a crusty looking Dodge hemi from a lady whose husband passed away in '07. She had established the price and I had cash in hand. But somehow in the time it took me to get to her place the price doubled. So I missed that one. Then I heard about a complete 325" Dodge hemi for $450 but I called about it two days too late. So if the planets had been aligned I may have had three more to add to the collection.

  4. You're definitely not alone...

    Between my Dad & I:

    1970 Cadillac 500
    196? Dodge 383
    1966 Poly 318
    1959 Lincoln 430
    1950 Merc flattie
    1950 Cad 331

At least they aren't in cars...

"extra" engines that are in what I consider parts cars:

    1963 Imperial 413 wedge
    1976 Cadillac 500

It could always be worse...or better, depending how you look at it...

Exactly! I have 3 pairs of old power-pack 1.72" sbc heads that I'll never bolt on any engine but I just can't bring myself to part with them. I think in the back of my mind I believe I may actually build a stock 283 or sumthun.........God, I even have a stock 2 barrel manifold..

Don't worry about it; should you ever decide to get rid of any of them, they'll probably net you a greater return on your investment than most others. They're also more fun to look at than a 401k.

    me: 18yrs old

425 nailhead (looking at getting a spare shortblock)
    two 4 bolt main 350's
    305 chevy
250 inline ford I got free
170 inline ford and trans I got free
    cracked 8rt flatty
drooling over a 331 cad with stick
and getting a free Gm quad 4 for "experiments"

as long as its cheap and aint cracked it has a pretty good chance at coming home...

  13. Gee, I got that disease, too but mine is kinda different. I can't keep from gathering up the old vintage ones-several that are definitely NOT hotrod engines but just can't let them go to rust. So they are pushed into every corner of the shop:

    (3) 1930 Pontiac flathead sixes
    (1) 1930 Oakland flathead eight
    (3) 1931 Pontiac flathead sixes
    (1) 1936 Dodge flathead six
    (1) 1941 Pontiac flathead inline eight
    (1) 1942 Hudson flathead six
    (1) 1942 Hudson flathead inline eight
    (1) 1949 Chevy 216 six
    (1) 1955 Chevy 235 six
    (2) 1960's Chevy 348's

My wife cannot even begin to understand why I keep them. I just say, "Cause they're mine".

  14. Are HEMI's like that? I need another one so they can reproduce;):D....would love to start a 'breeding program'..:D

    Cheers,

    Drewfus:)

    you guys are sick,
but then I must be too

    have 7 early olds motors
    two small chevies
    one big chevy
    a Stude
    and a nailhead

and at least 7 Cad Lasalle transmissions too

  17. Oh Yes . . . you definitely need two for the breeding to start. The only problem is that early Hemi pregnancies tend to be long, expensive and there are always complications. They tend to develop high oil pressure during pregnancy, are cranky, have boring sickness, put on extra weight (blowers) and eat fuel for two. Also, a full-term birth takes about 2 years . . . with frequest visits to the engine doctor. Be prepared to attend a lamaze at Mondello - while expensive, you'll find that she'll learn how to breath better and you'll pay dearly for the visits.

And lastly . . . when that little red-headed step child of a bastard is born -- it will probably have a bad case of colic. Be prepared, it will be loud and fussy . . . when it starts burping up that expensive nitro formula, you'll definitely be going back to the doctor, hopefully everything will be contained in the new diaper you put on it!

Up here in the northeast, pick up any paper with classifieds and find 2 to 200 engines, no shortage up here, there is a paper called Special Interest and its loaded with everything from early hemis to modern LS1's, Hope all you guys had a Great Turkey Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if You decide to do it, call me. I will send You my 5 gallon bucket of "itty bitty valves and springs"

as opposed to the uncomplete sets of 2.125/2.00 valves I have for the Olds projects...sometimes, race car parts can live on in a street application.
