what's with the tractor seats ?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by beetlejuice55, Apr 6, 2007.

  1. Thats some funny shit. And I thought I was the only one who who laughed at them things. At least when they were on the tractor they had some spring action. I imagine one ride around the block in one o' them rat rods and your ass would feel like somebody worked it over with an axe handle.

I too have spent many hours in the seat, or on the trailer hauling hay a good 15 years ago or so. Mine was a Farmall B, 1941 Row Crop. Crap, its been closer to 20! :(

For using a tractor seat, well they are moulded to fit butt cheeks perfectly. Id bet they are more comfortable than a lot of the channeled rods that have a back and a floor for a seat (just flat sheetmetal). Although nowhere near as cool a airplane seat , Id bet more comfortable than those not running cushings like the original bombers had.

I wouldnt do it, not my thing. But I think It would make a heavily channeled rod a little more drivable than the floor itself as a seat, which, in my opnion, IS a good thing.

I learned how to drive on an old 8N, I didn't think the seat was THAT bad.
Oh, and as far as tractors not seeing over 5mph, I know of an 8N with a 429 SCJ in it that has been clocked at over 120 mph.

Boy can ya'll talk some shit!!! I like how you automatically assume that since a rod doesn't have a bomber seat in it, it is a rat rod. How is a tractor seat any different from a bomber seat, or some seats that i have seen on a lot of bikes? I actually put a couple tractor seats in my rpu for roundup. it was kind of a spur of the moment decision because i didn't have anything else at the time. And my truck is FAR from a rat rod. I always like to hear people talk shit about other peoples rides, then ask them what they have ( or don't have) so we can go and pick it apart, making fun of details that they might like. The tractor seats i put in my rpu are one that actually came off our family farm in Iowa, I would probably be the 4th or 5th generation to sit on those seats, does that make them "gay" or cool to use them?
The cars that we build are art. We build them as an expression of ourself. When you start doggin on what other people build you are only taking away from their freedom of expression. I try not to ever make fun of what others build, even rice burners, if we all liked the same thing, this would be a boring fuckin world!

  6. That's funny. Sounds more like a tractor pull tractor for the highway. Probably a little loud on the pavement with those agricultural treads. You could always plow the field in record time.

Sometimes when you try and do something different, it just doesn't work. Tractor seats, in my opinion, fall into this catagory, Also they are not at all traditional. :(

They are not the only thing, in my opinion, that suffers from this problem.:(

damn hippie, calm down. I remember seeing your rpu....I don't remember what it looked like but I do recall noticing the seats. got any pictures?

I'm not a huge fan of bomber seats but they work well in some cars. I dig the rivets and legitimacy of using them in a hot rod. But I flat out hate tractor seats. I especially hate chromed tractor seats in black model t coupes with stacks. It's just lazy...if you can't come up with something better than a tractor seat for your car, you might need to start the build over.

Fuck off, i'm not a hippie. And if all you can recall from seeing my rpu is the tractor seats you need to get your eyes checked.

  15. For a bunch of guys that seem to dis-like the term "Rat Rod" you sure seem to throw it around a lot.

I've seen a few very well fabbed cars with tractor seats and I've seen some really poorly built cars with no floors and shitty brakes with very cool bomber seats obviously not built by the person that built the rest of the car. What the fuck, if you don't like it don't do it but I really think the heart of hot rodding comes from making the "BEST" from what you have. Someone in this thread said something about not liking non-car parts used on cars, then why are bomber seats cool, they're airplane parts, not to mention early use of disc brakes, also airplane parts. Build what you want and use the parts that work. Now quit bitchin' and get back out to your garage and build something.

There was a car on the cover of Street Rodder with tractor seats, and they looked awesome in it. But, I'm not a purely "traditional" guy, so I'm OK with liking other things too.

Every one can do what they want including me .But the only draw back I can see to using a tracktor seat is if you were to get into a accident looks like it could really hurt.My 2 cents

as far as I'm aware, this particular manifestation of the rodders ingenuity in incorporating unusual items into a build as an expression of his artistic individuality has not yet reached our shores and whilst I applaud any effort to 'think outside the box' I'm afraid, judging from the picture that in this particular case I have to add 'thank f*ck':D

I think we all know this car. I think they look good (though I wouldn't use them in my truck), but I am not all about tradition either. A little innovation is a good thing. I've seen it done right, I've seen it done wrong. Make sure it fits your ride.

I bought an old metal milk box at a flea market, touched up the lettering and put it on the front porch like you would have years ago for the milkman. But we planted flowers in it. As for tractor seats, I can only think of one use for them....... to sit on while you're driving your tractor.

tractor seats in HOT RODs were lame in 2007 when this thread was started and that hasn't changed.

I have a tractor seat welded to a model T axle housing. makes a good seat for the shop. don't think I'll be putting it in a car any time soon.

It's art for arts sake. I don't know a guy, and I know some OLD guys, who'd have used a tractor seat (or grill shell) on a car. If somebody likes 'em, and wants to set on one, fine, it's all about personal expression.

I think its lame. thats just me. A well made set with the engineered backs like in that tudor make a good statement, but the crapped up ones in shitboxes with no floors......well that kinda makes its own point.
