Dream about smoking sausages and polishing knobs? Eeww.

Your Edsel is coming along, update this thread with some new pictures as you make progress.

Are you going to run Supremes on the car like the photoshop shows? They look good. I'm going to put '58 Edsel caps on my car with the color keyed appliques and spinners if everything goes to plan. Someone's making the spinners new now so they're easy to get.

Any other mods planned while the bodywork is happening? I welded up my front fender antenna hole and drilled the quarters for dual antennas, and I drilled out the front fenders for dual mirrors too, but the rest I'm leaving stock. Your car with the wild paint job I could see more mods happening, like shaved emblems and stuff like that. Any plans?

  2. Frankie is no poser, that's for sure. Ten says, give her a welder and she will learn how to weld faster then most. And, do a good job of it.

    Let's see --

Not gonna run the Supremes yet (paying for paint and new exhaust system are at the top of the list right now. . .I'd like to be able to hear my gl***packs someday:rolleyes: -- right now my exhaust leak is a more pressing priority.), perhaps someday. . .when I win the lottery. . .

What size are the 58' Edsel spinners? I've seen originals on Ebay for a pretty penny, but in the 3 auctions I've seen they never state if they're for 14" or 15" tires. I've got 14"s. . .I love the look of'em, but can't afford the real deal, at least right now. . .

The car is already lowered and shaved, the antenna is already frenched.

Keeping the side chrome (around the inset panel), the front gun sights, and the trunk and lid trim, and the Edsel lettering on the hood.

Losing the side emblems and "Ranger" emblems -- they just interrupt the lines. Gone gone gone are the square side mirrors (one was broken anyway).

Minor stuff, while she's off the road: gonna finish installing my other door poppers (have one in for the driver's door already, need to finish the p***enger side, the trunk and the "hidden" one). Then, need to put in my headliner (which is sitting in a box in my living room) the windlace my mom and I made, re-do the door panels.

Yup. That's pretty much the list of **** to do before Round-Up. :D

    Frankie,
Looks great! My father, who was a bodyman, taught me that when you paint, "It is a waltz". If you watch a really good painter, you will see what he means.

Some constructive criticism...??? Blue works well with silver...there is no need to change the scallop colors...personally, I liked the brighter look of the blue...the black to too overpowering.

As for the scallops...ever heard that old saying "Less is more"...??? In your case, your pal JamesD, if he designed the scallops, has waaaa-aaaaaaaay too much on the sides of the car...If your intent was to show off the trim by highlighting it with color...then you've hidden it with too much paint.

My suggestion: remove the two scallops that come off the front wheel well and remove the blak color from the rocker panel :OR: remove the color from under the side trim and remove the lone scallop in the center of the car....that way less is more...scallops are supposed to enhance body lines...

But after all is said, it IS your car...

Too bad they won't let me in the country to stay.

  19. Congrats on the make over.......girls just make ***ier painters...lol......best of luck with the rest of the work. Looking forward to seeing pictures of your ride with it's new paint.

    Frankie rules.

it's been alot of fun having her around. as Far as welding is concerned, we will burn that bridge when we get over it. I am sure she will do fine.

40Stude Dude- Normally, I would agree, but the thing to remember is that photo is 2 dimensional. There is no way it's gonna hide the trim (or anything else, for that matter) once shot. the body lines on that monster are "pretty well defined" to say the least.

    Good times.
    Frankie-
The ****** hand prints on my truck went unnoticed until I was almost home. Ha. Just remember, Payback.....Well, You know the rest!:D

I do hear what you are saying, as far as there being a lot going on, but once you have painted the side spear and the surrounding swage lines on the body, then its getting pretty busy looking already. If you then want scallops, then they have to go someplace. Take a look at all the strange body lines on an Edsel and you´ll see what I mean - the deep recess for the side spear that tapers away to nothing in certain areas. It´d look fussy even if you painted it one colour, and they were normally two or three tone from the factory.

If we remove the front wheel well scallops and the other one also, then it really won´t be much of a scalloped paint job - what with the total lack of scallops and all.

  26. fantastic job so far , keep us posted ..

Agreed, but here's what I think, JamesD, what you have without the scallops is pretty much "panel painting," outlining trim, something that came about in the late 60's...and you've simply outlined the trim...those are not scallops. and you're mixing the two.

If you want scallops, then remove the outlined trim, leave it alone...and start the scallops back away from the wheelwell...leave some body color there, say about two inches...that way the wheel well will be more pronouced and it won't look so "open", same with the rear...you've hidden the opening with the black. And that's why I said the blue actually looked better, it didn't hide the wheel well opening.

IMHO, (and as a life-long graphic artist) you've got way too much going on there...and as I said before, "It IS her car"...do what you want...and as I said before as well: "Less is more."

  28. I'm all for the blue over the black myself. It's much more definitive then the black. The black just makes the Edsel look like most any other car. The blue will make the car pop. But, it's your call Frankie.

My original inspiration was the Mox Miller Impala - hence the blue. If you want to see "over the top" then take a look at that. It mixes panel painting and scallops. It works on that car though - in my opinion (as a life long illustrator :p). What I did here is a model of restraint in comparison! Essentially you´ll see a black car, with some panel painting on the lower body.

Apart from the bit about the black hiding the wheel arch shape, I´m having a little trouble picturing what you mean though.

Oh, well - its all just personal opinion in the end, as you rightly say.:)
