Hey, my nephew has a 54 merc. It has a 256, manual trans. I have a t-10 from a Ford full size car (67 Galaxie?). Bolt in? Thanks for your help.
If the T10 has both early and late patterns on it, the narrow pattern will line up with your bell housing. You may have to play around with either a spacer between the bell housing and the transmission or an extra long pilot bushing to get everything in order, though. Ford played around with different lenght input shafts. A Ford fanatic I knew once drug home a '59 Galaxie with a built 292 and a later four speed in it, and it had a 1/4 inch thick homemade spacer to move the trans further away from the engine.
I thought Ford went to all toploaders by 1967 ????? They came out in 1964/65???? I did a top loader conversion in my 54 Ford. These are the things to watch out for - they may or may not apply to a T10. The bolt pattern should bolt up. As far as I know, all the T10's had the same bolt pattern as the YBlock (as did all the very early top loaders). Maybe the later ones had the dual bolt pattern. The input shaft may be a little too long as was mentioned. For a toploader, all you had to do was shorten the very end and it would work ok with the stock bearing/bushing. Measure carefully. The front bearing retainer may be a little too large to fit in the hole in the bellhousing. You can trim down the retainer on a lathe. Measure carefully. Shifter location is a bear. If you are lucky, you got a trans with the shifter all the way forward on the tailshaft. This will help, otherwise you may have to go to bucket seats.
