The Merc looks bad ass. I know it is probably somewhere in the thread but what are the portions of your chop? Front and back and the how much slant on the b pillars? The car flows great.
John50,4" in the front and 5" 1/2 in the back....i dont have the measures on the slanted pillar but when we cut the B Pillars we used the same cuttin base and angled them where it meets the lowered roof...i wanted a clean forward look, not half way or a timid look...
Sled: Again changed the upper corner ,this time with rounded corner included..this is it!Of course not finished yet but you get the idea... Also was necessary to cut off all the original (on roof) base where the B pillar is factory reinforced...there is a hump comin down there which inferfere with the new lowered side window....so,gone already to discover some more hidden rust that needs repair...well,you know the same old story, rust never sleeps....
Kustom7777,interesting to see yours comin up too...insane but after takin some time to look at it...definately different..GO for it!!It has style..reminds me a sort of 50's Chris Craft boat ,i mean a classy one...Roof will be the flowing key...drink some more Yersey water and you're there!!!we need more creative visions here...
tom, i am online after 6pm my time, rest of the day i am in my shop ,hav no internet in the shop!.cheers pete
Hi Pete Great talking to you the other day. Yeah we are busy as hell here on the Merc. Personally I think its just coming along great, the cars flow lines are really spot on, and sure will be a hit out on the street. Still some odds and ends to finish, but the down in the trenches stuff has now passed. Glad you like it. oz40
Give myself some time and browsed thru all pages...looks great oz40! btw. steering box is getting sandblasted tomorrow! tnx
... Here....that car has come a long way, my hats off to you, lots of hours. Yeah, those are some tight corners, but I think our boy here can figure it out, he's qualified. I like to the 'one' clip like factory per window, and have had to get a tight radius like this one, wasn't easy by no means but, definitly possible.
51 Gringo, good to hear from ya ...spent some time to look at your work, just amazing stuff...nothin less than that! Soon will post some more pics on more work done on the Merc..inner side window frames by now... Will push from now on more hard than before to have it possibly done at the end of this year....have more tricky touches in mind but the goal is a balanced timeless kustom, nothing exagerate but timeless lines...less is more,ya know?? soon, Sled
51 gringo,i totally forgot...yeah,i like the factory style clip on stainless moldings too...have to have them to be classy!!!has to be done 1 way or another...
just WOW great job Man, for my part i have to left hands for a job like this´... much respeckt and greetings from Austria
Muerteventura, still far away but hey,no way back...has to be done!Took some new pics today on the fiddly side windows garnish moldings,so you guys can see some little updates...looks never ending when you work on such details...saludos from Tequilaland
Sled: Finally some more updates fellas. These areas are very fiddly and looks the never ending story...since i want the side windows side opening same as stock a full work has to be performed to make em workin....recreating the new slanted shape and relocate the pivoting areas...lot of time and patience here.here shown the bases on both sides..currently workin on the new garnish molding, pics comin shortly
Sled: Here's Tom tryin to get the new shape of the inner garnish molding, quite a puzzle to perform.Again, since the window has to be fully side opening there is no room for mas o menos!!It has to fit properly so such job is really takin his time....it will be such a nice detail when done! Many Mercs lack in this area, with unfinished side windows..both inside and outside!I consider this a crutial area in a top notch or average job done....no compromises here!
Sled: Fellas ,that's all for now....the modified garnish molding still some massaging but is takin shape.Looks a long way to go still but i'll push as best i can...Also been recently in touch with Axle from the Shifters, and i'm tryin to decide with almost 3 more months work upfront if is the case to bring the car unfinish (i seriously doubt it will be fully done) to the Suede Palace for all of you gang to see it in person...would love to,but haven't had time to made that plan so far....hope i can make it,would love to!!! In the meantime, back to the trenches....sled
Bad Bob,i agree with you ..and actually im just plannin with Axle on the invitation for the 49 Merc anniversary in the Suede Palace. He confirmed taht is no need to have the car finished and running and since there are less than 3 months deadline perhaps the best way to go is to show all the naked metal as you suggested....scratchin my head now on what's next!!!But im very tempted to bring the car up there, will be fun...
As I recall when I made my wings swing out, I only moved that square bracket that shows in the above pic. I had to move it forward. Needed to cut a new square hole in the ledge next to the window, on the body. The square hole was so that relocated pivot could drop into the body.
Mikes51,i'm not there yet but shortly i will relocate the pivoting stuff...since the extreme slanted side window consequently the whole thing has to be modified as you guys see....probably the pass side will be faster after the first done...i'm curious to see it installed and make it open...saturday and still pushin all day on that crap
Just a quick update...almost done the pass side garnish nolding, pics will be added soon..i wish we can push more but details are time consuming...weeks are flying literally! Anyway, then is time to jump back and weld the back section again.. Have to buy a 9" rear end also to put the car on the ground ...can't wait to see the actual stance,i have no idea how it will sit... ok,back to work.....
Wow, is all I can say. Gives me hope for my 49 which I thought was pretty far gone but nothing compared to where you started. I can't wait to see how this one turns out. You guys are my heroes!!!
OshkoshRob,hey...there is PLENTY hope for you future kustom,no doubt about it!! I just went back lookin at the early threads of Swiss Cheese and man o' man...can't believe it myself we went so far!! So,yours IS very rebuildable..sure,i can esily see rockers, floors, lowering but is a agreat start..and is a Merc coupe buddy!! GO ON with it...good luck Rob!!Keep us updated here on the Merc family
Hi fellas, just a quick update here...filling holes on the firewall, makin sure the rear end is squared and centered and many small hidden details to work out...not enuff to take new pics worth it..you can't notice such stuff...But keep going hard,no doubt...i'm gettin there!!! Stay tuned ,Sled
Sled: Hey Merc nuts, here finally some news....still fightin with the whole rear end, tryin to set it all in place squared and aligned...realized more previous damage keepin the back section really out of measurements...so,also the trunk hinges were affected and will take em off, tack weld the trunk lid in place with correct 3 mm gap all around ,cur off the whole hinges base (will be dumped, anyway) and created new to restart tackin and aligning the whole thing back in place... also a common problem in these Mercs is the vertical straight cut on each side on the bottom sides of the hood..sooner or later it will crack,i noticed in many Mercs....so this part will be built 1" or so offset to avoid such inconvenience... more to come....Sled
Sled: Inside wiew, have another set of trunk hinges which are in better conds...will rebuild all the pins em later on but for now they are enuff to align the whole thing...at this point Tom has to work from inside only cause the trunk lid is spot welded on the outside, just to ensure the perfect gaps ...puzzle tray already gone (trash as usual ) makin me adding the percentage of the original sheet metal gone ...i like to count em all at he end,Ah! So,tomorrow the new puzzle tray will be built so i can put in place the trunk hinges again and then get all aligned...yeah,nothin fitted at all ,twisted, bent etc....but is comin up somehow!! Ok,what's more??Ah,these cars for sure even stock they have great misaligments...far from perfect! I noticed on the inner rockers..have em built exactly the same but the pass side did not fit for almost 1".....from the factory was out..had to recut the whole lenght and trimmed again...
Sled: some filled firewall holes, for the clean look....also will mount the master cylinder under the dash for a cleaner engine room wiew... Door hinges are ready to be rebuilt, new pins in there basically now i have to finish the rear end so once is all tight there i can start adding more side panels and floors....and welding all over ..and,oh well!!!Whatever.... haven't decided what tailights yet.... More soon.....Sled
