Is there a way to prep a powder coated frame for paint? I need to touch up some road scars and don't want to spend the $ for a new powder coat job for my frame.
We've had frames powdercoated which acts as a mild filler then had it painted over to match the vehicle. Makes for a good sealer on bare metal and does a good job of smoothing seems and welds.
Already a bunch of good advice. Just to add to the confusion that last thing that I had that was powder coated was a pair of cal custom rocker covers. I couldn't get nuthin' to stick to 'em. I finally scuffed em and sparayed on a couple of coats of zinc chromate primer. Then I was able to paint 'em just fine.
Get some MEK from HD (Paint section) or wherever and mix a small amount with the powder until you get a paste--dab it on the part and smooth it out.Perfect for the little touch ups.
Sand and treat just like a high build primer, then paint on top like any thing else. they are both polyester base products, and compatible with each other. We Powder Coat car frames, body's ect all the time for a primer coat. We have guy's bondo over the powder also.
