It's probably a factory tach for a high dollar muscle car, yenko or something?

A buddy of mine was buying tachs for awhile not so long back. SW tachs were going for more than others. Also, I see that he has a cup and mounting bracket. That usually fetches more $$$. Other than that, it is just the current interest in old tachs I suppose and the seller testing the market.

That's been on there a couple of times with no bids. That's alot of money for that one. It's not a rare tach but it is really nice. It's been converted so it doesn't need the sending unit which is a plus. I'd give him $250 for it but I dont need it. I've already got one in my car.

They used SW Tachs in some of the high performance Studebakers in the 50s (like the Speedster). It may be that this 8,000 RPM Model would be the same one used in those cars. The guages from that Speedster model do tend to be pretty expensive.

I picked one up this week. Wasn't in pristine shape as pictured, but is in pretty good shape. Should clean up. Chrome cup is all peeled off, but other than that its pretty clean. Was told it was on a 69 Camaro....overall seemed like a decent deal for the price.

Ive got one almost identical, exept the numbers are all above the markings, not up and down like that...i paid twenty bucks at a swap meet.
Just a question, sorry to hijack a little, what does the conversion usually cost to replace the need for the sender box?

I've got the same exact tach as that siting here next to the computer, same up/down numbering and all. Black painted mounting cup and steering column bracket too. Paid about $40 for it, from memory. No sending unit though, and not converted to work without one.

  9. $450 is just silly. I'm not a SW tach historian, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Ok.. maybe I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn. But I watched eBay for six months trying to get my SW tach and the 8K versions are not that hard to get (there maybe something special about the over/under number combo- not sure about that). Also, I'm pretty sure the cup on that tach is a Moon cup that can currently be purchased for 30ish bucks. I bought the Moon cup at So-Cal and put it on my SW tach. The tach is not a conversion, that gold box on the back replaced the older firewall mounted box.

I'm too lazy to hit eBay and do a search, but I can take a guess at who listed it. This same guy bids on virtually any usuable SW tach and is single handedly (is that a word?) driving up the price on the SW gauges. He beat me on a couple of tachs I wanted, then takes better pictures and postes them on eBay for 2X the price he paid.

I finally had to bid super high on this tach, and sure as anything he bid against me and doubled the price of the next bidder.

I've got a SW vintage 10,000 RPM tach in my 409 Biscayne. I've yet to be able to determine if it is rare or not. It uses the red under hood sending unit.

I scored this one from a street rodder buddy's trashcan along with the speedo and other matching gauges incuding an oil temp. He pulled them out of a old hot rod he was rebuilding so he could put in digitals. Seeing this post makes me feel preety good, I thought it was cool, didn't know they had any value. A liitle help please... does it just have one wire to the dizzy and one to ground? It doesn't need a hot wire?

  13. I'm gonna ask a real dumb question to prove my ignorance:eek:

WHY will a SW bring so much more than a Sun?

Supply and demand . Factory Muscle cars that used SW tachs as original , like a Shelby GT 500 or Baldwin Motion Chev need a SW tach for value . Sun made 1000 and 1000 of tachs.........
