Was on my way back from Florida, and stopped in Mcdonough Ga. at Summits new store .I had a blast looking at the largest selection of chevy parts ,I have ever seen .Then I looked for some sbf stuff to go on my 302,
that I'm putting in a 29 tudor. Finaly found the ford water pumps which were mounted on the display board upside down . I know there is a lot more important things ,But dam in one of the largest hot rod shops around. Thanks for letting me rant .

Check with Bennett Racing. They are the definite Ford nut's place to go for information and stuff. If you want to make one go, go there. Just a tip.

I use a Ford 302 in my '27 T roadster because it came with the car, albeit dirty, not hooked up and kind of ugly. I did a little change to it, and it runs the little T around with grins to spare. I have always been embarr***ed of having it in my little T, but I'm getting over that. And I like how inexpensive these are in local cl***ifieds. I never liked the Ford small block...but out of necessity came an appreciation for this little V8. And thanks to guys here on the HAMB, I've learned a thing or two about the Ford small block. They aren't the junk I once thought...!

My cars get alot of respect even from the die hard Chevy and Mopar guys . I wonder if that will change when I put a 302 in my 36 Chevy pickup.

Got one in my '40 SD - pair of open letter Cobra VC's, Edelbrock Performer and carb - hey presto - R-E-S-P-E-C-T (thanks Aretha).

Tech tip: pre SBF '69 waterpumps have the bottom outlet on the same side as Chevy SBC/BBC so you can junk that pesky Chevy and live guilt free with an SBF without changing the rad. Speedway stocks 'em.

Running a Chevy in a Ford  is like 'gay marriage' - it may work but it wasn't meant to.:D

They are getting respect now, but its been along time coming. SBC were easier and cheaper to build do stuff for them and how long they have been around and how many vehicle that came with a SBC. The price was always cheaper to build one also. I love my SBF in my Falcon and if I had a Chevy product I would run a SBC or BBC, I am brand loyal on my cars but thats just me. I always like to say if its cool its cool.

  12. My Dad always said "It takes a real Machanic to work on a Ford and a parts changer to work on a Chevy". He was a Ford man from the first 29 Ford Roadster he owned until the last Ford LTD before he died. I had a SBF in a 79 Ford F-150 that I put a cam, intake, Headers. It would eat Cameros, and Firebirds all day. I also loved to beat up on all the me too cars(Fox ch***is Mustangs).

These Indy Ford V8's were based on the small block Ford. Truely remarkable by any standards.

I put a SBF in my Model A and i have never had more complements from people because i put a ford in a ford. Plus they are good motors and parts are everywhere just like the chevy plus its a little bit different.

I have built many small block fords. my favorite is the late model 5.0. I have taken more at least 4 of them apart after many miles and they needed nothing more than new rings and standard bearings!!!! the first chevy i built i had to use a ridge remmer to get the slugs out. my 51 two door is getting one, its all built and waiting for me to get the t5 built. my old 5.0 stang did 107 mph in 1/4 not to bad (it was charged) . my .02

My only gripe about the SBF is that they just don't look right in a traditional hotrod. I'm currently building a 32 3 window with one and I'm not liking it. The owner has two running early hemis and he's determined with putting that ugly little engine in there, no matter what I say.

If it was a fat fendered car, I really wouldn't care.

people say that the sbf doesn't look right in a traditional hot rod

the sbf was introduced in 62 and the sbc was introduced in 55, theres only 7 years difference. so does that mean any tradiional rods stopped being designed and built after 62.

i'm puting one in my 29A tudor. it will have a full hood not to hide the engine just because i want it that way.

"put a ford in a ford"

if you use tin rocker covers & original air cleaner they can look from the early 60's or earlier if you don't know when the engine was introduced

    rant over!

X2....I know a lot of guys over the last 20 years who have done just about everything to these 5.0 motors. Turbos, Supercharging etc..They take a beating like no other

  23. Here's a local one that does.

Pic taken in the staging lanes at the November 2007 Airport Drags.

Owner is a quiet soft-spoken guy and admits to running in the tens with the SBF.
Maybe better if I'm interpreting his just as nice same year street Ranchero with SBF - which I believe runs 13's - that apparently doubles as the strip tow car now and then.
Couple days back the streeter had a 9.62 on the side window.

The guy is our local SBF guru as you can imagine and has found more than a few nice Falcons and Rancheros.
    Usually sells them.

Right now he's working on a mild mannered SBF engine that's going into a Pinto.
He's aiming for some sort of heads up cl*** that limits out at 12 seconds from what I understand.

The SBF is a nice little engine, works well in most anything and doesn't look 'funny'.

Pretty bad when the SBC is used so much that anything else looks weird to some.

Note that I didn't knock the SBC here, just commenting on it's overwhelming popularity.
I know, someone will get on here and mention it's popular for good reason.
No argument from me, I liked em when they were just a Chevy engine.

    Don't want one though....

  24. You've probably seen these pics of my pals nice 46 sedan.
It runs a 302 SBF mit hot cam, not too wild, and a 4 bbl with headers.

Runs pretty good, especially now that he's got the cam in time after the 'mechanic' installed it a tooth or two off for the prior owner.

Sweetie rode in the back seat of this car and was amazed at how much room there was.

And my favorite pic of his car.

This last pic and the first one taken on the cars first out of town trip with the squared away engine.
I followed in the 32 just in case.
    No probs.

We ended up at Rosies Cafe just down Hwy 93 from Hoover Dam.
Great restaurant and most times an interesting stop.
Plus, most times a plus anyway, there's a pinstriper on the premises.

We went out there to get the car striped, but the guy let the apprentice do it.
I'd be embarr***ed to run that particular and poorly done pinstriping, but it's still on the car.

    'Cest la Vie....

  25. Depends on what you're doing.....

SBF's don't fit in a lot of Hot Rods easily and, as mentioned before, they don't quite look "right" in a traditonal Rod. However, they fit better in Shoebox Fords than anything, look great, and are a great engine.

Hell, I like 'em all. The Deuce has an early Hemi, the '40 Coupe has 327 SBC, and the Shoebox is getting a SBF. Have a Flathead and a Nailhead on stands waiting to see where they land......in the '28 Roadster or '36 3W..........

    Johnnie.

  26. Which one came out in '62, the 289? Are they the same on the outside as a 302? I don't know **** about Fords but we had a lot of fun in the 5.0 Mustangs years ago.

Don't understand all this Ford in a Ford, Chev in a Chev stuff. I thought hot rooding was about engine swaps and the like so do your thing and who cares what anyone else thinks.

I like SBFs myself, but parts interchangability over the years is a big problem compared to SBC. Flywheel balance, bellhousings, water pumps, etc. are a major pain in the *** unless you know exactly what year/model your engine came from. Chevy is definitely more "hot rod" friendly.

People who say sbf don't look right or don't fit. Must be the dumest people in the world. Lazy blind and as non mecanical as a cave man.
