Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Nicks Hot Rod Garage, Dec 3, 2008.

  1. Found these listed on Craigslist this week, made a deal and loaded it up.

    • Appears to be a '51 303
    • Funky trans with top shift conversion!
    • Olds rear end
    • Model A frame

    Motor turns over, one bent push rod (I need one), has a motorcraft 2 barrel carb, nice valve covers.

    the shifter for the selector trans is great, a bit crude but the principal looks very workable

  10. Crazy transmission shifter, the whole thing slides, I would guess this is a homemade shifter bolted on top of the ******. Anyone know?

    I know nothing about Oldsmobiles, how do I know if those are "McGurk" rockers?

    Definitely an early olds rear, I'll get the numbers off of it to see what the gear ratio should be.

    that aint no hydro stick! That is of course if the driver is not hydraulic in nature!

  12. The Bent Push Rod

    It is solid, with a cylinder that has a cup machined in the top, the other side just slides on to the push rod.

    I'm not familiar with those rods.. or extensions/adapters if that's what they are

    makes me wonder if the extensions go on stock rods to work with collapsed hydraulic lifters..?

    be interesting to see what else is in that motor

    I've got a n.o.s. set of Gotha adjustable rocker arms for Olds V8s, and they came with a set of those slip-on pushrod ends to make the stock rods usable with the ball shaped end of the adjuster. I've got a box of probably 3-400 new pushrods of various shapes and sizes. If you give me some dimensions, I may have one that will complete your set. Since the engine's got adjustable rockers, it may very well have a solid lifter cam too.

    I'll be taking the motor apart this weekend, at least the heads to see the magic inside............

    if they are stock rods, i have a few i can spare..

    my 303 had a bent and broken rod i found after drivin it for about 1000 miles... threw in a new one, good as gold!

    let me know man, ill ship it out to you asap if needed

  18. Pretty cool start to a new project!

  19. push rods are :

    length = 8 5/8" 8.625
    diameter = 1/4" .250

    One end is round, the other is blunt/flat.

    It looks as if it the flat end may have been cut with a hacksaw.

    Does anyone know if that was part of the installation with the Goth Rockers to accommodate the caps?

    With Gotha rockers, they provide new ends for the pushrods, once you cut the ends off.

  21. Excellent, so all I need to replace the bent push rod is......... a factory push rod!

    Thanks everyone for your help!!!

    Thats good to know, my 324 has Gotha's and the little adapters, made me wonder where the hell the adapters might have came when I pulled her apart. Barn Find T, my guess is you may find some other neat stuff when you dig into that motor, when mine was rebuilt we found some big Jahns slugs and ported heads, my Hydra also did have a "home brew" shifter on it as well. Your new drive line may have seen some severe duty in it's day!

    Yes, that is the adapter. If you decide to run a Buick three speed (1937) or a Packard std. trans give me a PM have adapters for both and early Ford top loader (39) as well. Mike I still have the WH Ducoil for your 389 I saw you at the GreyBeard show but lost you in the crowd. I had a 54 324 at a buddies booth. Blown,Algon injected and you still get more posts on the HAMB than I did WTF. I called Arrron about that Olds and my only question was does the trans have two shifter arms or one. I will check the push rods I have and will let you know if I have what you need. I also have McGurk adjustables on one of my engines but, it doesn't have the adapters. Anyhow I will get back to you. **** work has been busy!!! Tim

    I agree those are Gotha rockers. They came in 1.5 and 1.8 ratios. 1.5 is hard to find.You can tell which ratio ...If the rocker shaft itself is pretty much centered between the small and big bolt on each rocker shaft stand, then it is 1.5.If the rocker shaft is much closer to the BIG bolt, they are 1.8.On the 1.8 stands; the rocker shaft damn near rubs on the shank of the big bolt.I should have a single stock pushrod. PM me if you want me to mail it out.

  30. You are GOOD! sure enough, has a dual point plate in the distributor!!!
    That huge condenser must have tipped you off!

    I got the the motor unloaded today, haven't had a chance to open it up.
