I'm picking up a model a chassis, and U-Haul has no computer input for the wheelbase of the car, and can't input the car.
I can't go measure it, because I don't have it yet.
Does anyone know the wheelbase of the car as well as the distance between the front wheels center to center?
Or, what car is similar that I can give them so they can plug it in to the system.

    Thanks in advance.

    Ed.

    Hello,

I just went and measured the wheel base on the 31 truck I'm working on.

    It has a boxed frame.
The wheel base centerline front to rear is 9 ft. the front end with tires measures 5 ft 6 inches.
I hope these are the same as stock but it should get you in the ballpark.

  6. model A wheelbase = 103.5"

  8. What he said, serious. Many of those places will not rent you a trailer for an old car.

They just look to see if it needs their BIG or SMALL trailer.

This is the only way you will get a trailer from any rental company to pick the car up... Either the car will be too big or tow vehicle too small...

    '87 Toyota...;)

A '32 5W fits on one... I can tell you that much.

  12. I'm with him . I've had some go-arounds with them . Just say " 87 Toyota" cause that's in their computer . Anything else leads to chaos . Truth is a bad thing

Lie to them. Tell them it's a Honda Accord. The do not have data for a 65 Alfa Giulia nor a 1974 Fiat 128 and did not even know what a Lancia was.

From now on, I only tow Hondas with rental equipment.

  14. Plus those trailers have fixed wheel straps on the front. For an A you might be allright but there is not a good way to adjust your load for or aft for better weight bias. That can make the tongue too light or heavy depending on the car.

You can input Fords back to 1928 on their online database for renting a trailer.

    I've done it twice.

They even have model selection (Model A Phaeton, Model A Victoria, Model A Taxicab, etc.)

Whatever you tell them what you are picking up, make sure it's something lighter than your tow vehicle is otherwise they say no no no and your'e not getting a trailer.

Sometimes they won't rent to you with an old car because the tire diameter is bigger than the tire diameter of newer cars and so they won't fir there tire straps.

they told me that my 1994 ford pickup wasnt suitable to tow an 87 toyota pickup about a year ago.. so i told them it was an E-150 instead and apprently a van is better for towing in the eyes of uhaul..

If you tell them it's a heavy car, they will refuse to rent the trailer to you. Happened to me once so always pick some tiny common jap car.

The reason U-Haul doesn't list the Model A for their trailers, is that their wheel bonnets do not fit 19" or 21" tires. I just brought one home from NH this summer and I told them it was a 1947 Ford... no problem. If your truck has a class III hitch and is at least a 1/2 ton truck you'll have no problem with their computer.

Again, I've rented a trailer from U-haul TWICE listing a 1930 Model A specifically. The tie downs fit 21" tires just fine. (Though the second one had 16"s on the front)

Maybe I'm dealing with a much more lenient renter?

Tried to rent one to haul my 61 Stude p/u home. They said it the wheelbase was too long and wouldn't rent me one. Called up another place across town, told them is was a 67 Mustang, they said they had one ready to go. Funny how that old pickup sat up there just fine. Didn't look like the 67 but hauled like one. I tell them 67 all the time now. They never have a problem.
