  5. Says the only guy who has already built so many cool ideas I've lost count. :D Seriously, though, I've looked at the band across the top of the Cosma Ray (I think that is the name) bubble top 60's Vette that is in the Starbird museum (I dunno who built it....it shows up in both Starbird stuff and Barris stuff). Anyhoo, it looks like it is just 1/4 inch thick aluminum bent and cut to shape. The Vette also has a wood veneer in the center of the band, but that would probably not really fit here. LOL. But, I do remember seeing a chopped Merc back in the 80's that had some custom trim that was layered or stacked metals...the bottom one being the widest and then the next layer was narrower and was copper, I think and then a third that was aluminum or stainless again. Could look cool if done right, I'm sure. If any one could....you could! ;) I'll see if I can find some pictures of that car to give you an idea of the effect.

This is what I was thinking - a bit easier to get in and out of if nothing else! Its untapered somewhat, also.

JMHO, but I think James D just nailed a great look for the car!

  8. Yes.. Last one looks best. I normally don't like bubble tops, because they take a sleek car and make it look like, well, it has a bubble on it. With the low taper in the back it almost screams for a fastback type roofline, but the gold/yellow photoshop the lines really work (looks like some of the taper is taken out?). Gives it an almost factory dream car feel, too.

Of course it may be a real bastard to get the top made that way, but...

    My 2 cents....

What you're building is something people will be talking about for years
to come. Since it is a throw back to the old radical kustoms, I think that
you need to re-consider a top like on the Aztec. This is something that
you don't see on other kustoms because it takes a certain style of kustom
    to pull it off.

I posted some pictures stolen from Rikster site........

    Happy Trails,

    Mick

i like James d's photoshop. I think that if you could make a top combining the buick windshield with a bubble, or clear top that it would look the best... maybe even if it followed the same roofline of the shoebox roof your were going to use.

That's pretty cool, I like the limegold color too.
No doubt it would be really tough to shape a bubble to that extent, but it sure would look cool. Very sporty. Could even work nice just to have that as a padded top more like the Aztec.
At any rate, I think having the Olds windshield out front with functioning doors/side glass/frames + partial bubble is much better than a complete bubble over the whole top surface of the body because it looks more like a factory concept rather than a Jetsonsmobile - and it would be more user friendly.

I think Jim is going for the record for most concepts included in one build.
So far you have enough variations to cover the next 4 years worth of Kustoms Illustrated's "Evolution of a Shoebox Ford" installments.

mick,,,i have something similar to that mocked up already,,except my car will be a two seater,,so the top isnt as long as the aztec,,mine is also curvier,,,,just wanted to check out the possibility of doing a bubbletop,,,i really dont think it works,,although some of the renderings are great,,,,,,,,,the real car will very likely look similar to customcory's drawing,,,,

today i moved the olds quarters up 3 1/2 inches,,,,,made a world of difference,,,the proportions are so much better now,,,it actually took some of the taper out of the quarters by doing that,,,,,,,,its really amazing how an inch or there can change a car so much........ill post up some pics over the weekend,,,,,

  17. I'm late to this thread.. as usual! Wot a great project! Kustom7777 you are a bold man and I think you will have a custom for us all to admire when you are done. Even though it sounds like you have finalized plans for the top of your project, I was tempted to try my hand at what a semi-bubble top might look like. Sooo, here is my .02. Better late than never? Thanks for the challenge and please post progress shots for us to envy.

  18. I hate when that happens!

BEAUTIFUL JOB!!!,,,,,,,,you are making it really tough for me NOT to consider that look,,,,i REALLY like the way that came out,,

  21. Thanks for the kudos! I really enjoyed this little adventure because the project is such a cool one. Kustom7777 I didn't do much to change what you have already - just took a wee bit of the taper out of the quarters as you had considered, pie-sectioned the front fenders a tad (which doesn't seem necessary after all), and moved a slightly narrowed c-pillar forward to the door opening. All in all fairly minor changes considering the tasks you have managed already! Such a pretty car! Good luck with the rest of the build.
