Selling anything and everything for money...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by sckracing, Dec 5, 2008.

  1. I don't mean to sound the "nail them while their down" horn , but...

I was just listening to a local AM radio station talking about a recent spike of people in need, and not so in need (wanting to shore up their discrecenary funds), selling off personal property and belongings, including REAL personal property from their being (hair, fertile female eggs, kidneys, blood, etc.).

So, as a lifelong motorhead, my first thought was... grab some cash and the ol' car trailer and head to the fields, hills, and towing lots (as in, "helping" those who may finally realize cash is better than hording a rusting hulk of tin).
As a matter of fact, I just noticed last week (to my dismay) that a local farmer down the street had disposed of, or sold, two 40's and one 50's pick-up that had been sitting rusting away behind one of his sheds for over twenty or thirty years. And another site, in an older industrial area that had older vehicles in its back lot, just cleaned out their property to either sell it, or lost it to foreclosure.

As an end around, those that can (score the rusted tin), would be nice to see more hard to find parts available.

Has anyone taken up this scenario, or plan to? Or perhaps have a line on where somebody could go scooping ( again, I'm not advocating taking advantage of a true rod builder who has fallen on hard times)? I had some friends that did this a number of years back (when the economy was faultering) and got some great deals and pieces while helping the resident afford their bill payments and/or groceries.

The news media sells sensationalism. The word "GOOD" does not appear anywhere on Time, Newsweek, or any other rag or network.
I don't listen to them, and don't order my life by their stories. Life goes on; and how well you live it is dependant on how well you remain steady.
Lose a job; its an oportunity to do something better. I've been in most situations, like layoffs, recessions, etc, and I've never changed the way I live one bit.
Now go build yer hot rod and quit worryin'.

I found the remains of an old race car. It was for sale and basically in my lap. Too bad the door swings the other way, and I have no money either....and I like my kidney.

Be careful Denise-with the luck you've had with parts lately, you may need 'em all.

I have purchased a lot of quality tools over the past six months - hardly or never used, 10% to 25% of what they list for normally. Construction is virtually at a standstill here, and guys are selling TIG/MIG/Arc - compressors, pneumatic tools of all kinds, hand tools - Snap-On owners are still a little proud - expecting to get almost what they paid, but a used toolbox is a used toolbox - as long as it was built well in the first place and has roller bearing drawers. Cars are beginning to show up on Craigslist - folks that had intended to build a hot rod are not divesting themselves of that project and any ancillary parts for it.

Good time to have a couple of dollars in your 'discretionary' vault. And don't forget - a guy in front of you with CASH is way better than two guys on the phone. Remind your seller of that.

"let your conscience be your guide, but always offer them way less than they're asking"

Go out and scoop up as much as you can. At least you know it is safe with you and will not end up in the crusher.
Now is when prices are starting to regulate if you are willing to look and ready to move when the opportunity comes along.
Hell I saw an add the other day for NINE Stromberg 97's - three 94's, two 88's and a 81, an edelbrock triple intake for a flatty along with good edelbrock finned heads for the same application and two fuel pumps all for under a grand.
Is it unfortunate that there are a lot of people in this current situation? Yes for sure, but who would not jump at that deal if they were able.

Yeah, I've been playing that game. I've picked up a couple cars for really good prices lately from guys hurting and needing a little cash. Gotta stop thou,, don't wanta go into the poor house by buying all the good buys around! Somehow I don't think my wife would like living in an old car.

I've changed my mind and decided I should sell some "eggs" instead since I have lots of extra of those. Still interested??:D

You're right, good thinking. See above answer, since I have lots of extra, selling a few of these won't be an issue.:D

The price thing has been noticeable around here, too. It seems to be a perilous time floating around, but also a unique time to find bargains on OLD car stuff (cars included!). I see some cool offered sales on local cl***ifieds every few days.

It's all the worthless, unskilled people that are being layed off. Bankers that make way too much for what they do. unskilled laborers that are transients anyway. If you are skilled and a true professional at what you do you can always find work. I am working on a car that the owner bought 2 years ago. Sold off his stock options to buy it. Best thing he ever did because all the stock was Washington Mutual. Of course he is having a tough time now because he was a mortgage broker making well over 100 grand a year(too much for what he doe's and don't get me started on ***le company's) now he is making less than 40 and his world is falling down around him. Now he has to sell the car(after he completely tore it apart to make "improvements") I'm sorry but I can't feel bad for someone who can't find a job making more than 60k a year(Be a man and take one for 40k a year). It's your own damn fault if you buried yourself in debt to have fancy houses and fancy cars.

I totally disagree with the way you see this. I am 55 years old and NEVER have I drawn a days unemployment. I was a certified welder holding a B31/3 card[22years] and the welders on here know what that is. For most of those years I traveled to stay employed. Fun at first but just a damn job in the end. I sold the business and tryed to stay home with family. I have been a super on concrete construction for 7 years. I am working 80+ hours aweek and I am on a salary. Thats the way the business is set up.The U.S. is on it's ***! Skilled or unskilled it is hard for a man or woman to find a job. My wife is lossing her job of 15 years in Jan. She is highly skilled. Lots of GOOD people losing their jobs and not a damn thing you can do about it. If you are still employed your one lucky individual. I am still working but took a large pay cut and I run the damn operation. So don't be so quick to blame the skilled or unskilled laborer, you may be next. I hope not. I just layed off 10 good men that had famileis and it tore me up. What we are about to see is going to make the depression of the 30's look like a mild recession. Hangon!

That was not my intent. I know lots of good hard working men in a bind right now. Everyone is not highly educated or skilled but still good people. I have ate in a soup line myself. I hope it comes back and everyone considers Obama as the equal to Gondie. Obamas not going to fix it and neither could McCain. This **** has been happening for 20+ years. I'm through now.
