That's about the only music I listen to (50s-60s). Drives my wife nuts :D

St. Louis has 1430 am which is one of the best oldies stations I've found.

The HAMB never dissappoints :D I myself, love all kinds of music. But its like a knife though, its useless unless it has an edge on it. I don't like dumb music with dumb lyrics. BTW, I like Hound Dog Taylor too. But you never know what I'll be listening to and I like that.

The Outlaw Country Channel on XM is good. A lot good artists steeped in tradition. But if you limit yourself to just a style you are missing out. Theres a world of music that inspires. I'm just not into Neal Sedaka or Doo Wop, it just just doesn't do anything for me. When I am working on an engine on the stand I want it quiet. I have to concentrate I can't forget anything. Sanding, something with a steady beat. Driving (when I could) I wanted mental pictures, bad ass riffs. Speaking of riffs, the first riff I learned was the Venture's "Walk Don't Run" :D Kicking back, I indulge my inner muse and play my own stuff.

Inspiration for art comes from many places. Thats a tradition. Back to the garage. I have to put some rings on some pistons. There won't be any music on.

I think it'd be to hard to keep up with Slayer whilst having sex...but thats just me, and I'm lazy.

Outlaw Country is a rad station, I'm not a big country fan, but sometimes I'll tune in. They have a good mix of old country, new country and 'country rock' like Steve Earl that kicks ass.

I never listen to music while driving my hot rod. Rather hear the engine.
But if I wanted some hot rod cruisin' music, it would be hard to beat George Thorogood and the Destroyers. Remember the music at the start of "Christine"?

    P.S.
Saw a great movie yesterday..."Cadillac Records"...about Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Willie Dixon, Etta James and their blues and early "devil's music". Great music and lots of cool 50's Cadillacs.

I love the end of The Rock 'n Roll Radio video... He swings a Mosrite at the TV then the close up shows a Les Paul hitting the screen. But I have to say, Phil Spector ruined the album "The End of The Century"...

  21. Check out pandora.com for your music research and listening!
Gotta love all those folks listed by DocWatson in a earlier post on this thread. But I would add several more. Anyway, ya might check out Wynonie Harris for his superb "Jump Blues" style of the late 40's early 50's. He be one cool cat!
Also, ya can check out a ton of music styles on pandora.com. I'm listening to it now and Dizzy Gillespie is jumpin out the speakers! Ya can type in an artist or music type and Pandora Radio will create your own "radio stations" with similar sounds! And best of all its FREE!

  23. Umm, Bad to the Bone is a re-hash (Not quite a cover) of a couple of late 40s and 50s Blues songs. 1 Scotch 1 Bourbon 1 Beer is just a cover of an early 60s Blues song.
Most rock-n-roll is based in Blues, the lyrics sample it right through the 50s and 60s. A lot of songs are amalgamations of Blues standard verses.
George Thorogood by his own admition extensively samples Blues in most of his songs. Its not thought of as plagiarizing as the same verses, word structures appear in a HUGE amount of the Blues.

I didnt notice the 'Traditional' as per rockabilly (Is there such a thing?) I was refering to trad Blues (Yes there is such a thing!) It kinda fills a gap, the foundation of what we listen to now.

    Doc.

  24. Nothing screams tradition like the blues. Get some REAL stuff like elmore james, blind boy fuller, sonny boy williamson, and t-bone walker. Even some Memphis Slim. If you want the stuff that influenced early rock, search there! Heck, get some C&W!! Bob Wills will get me any day though, "Awwww Hawwww!":D

Try Gene Vincent and the Bluecaps. 'Bops' along real nice!

Hard for me to imagine, but I conceed that everyone has got their own taste. For me there's just something about the raw wildness barely controlled by the cool steady rythem, of Rockabilly that just goes with Hot Rods.
Traditional Rockabilly (Sun guys, Johnny Burnett Trio etc.), as opposed to Neo-Rockabilly or Pscyco-Billy.

Although the Ventures did a surf album, and you find their stuff in Surf sections at record shops today they were technically not a surf band, but more Instrumental.

Although i agree with some of what you write i disagree that the Rockabilly movement is a recent fad.
