Well this car has a great story. Found it on a 4wd website looking to trade for a jeep. I just so happend to have a jeep for sale and a little bit of money in my pocket from selling my bagged 53 chevy truck. So around 9 oclock thursday the 16th im running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to get a truck/trailer together. get the paper work to the jeep notorized, and get all loaded up to leave at 5 in the morning to go get the 49. Get everything together heading to my buddys house to load up the jeep and almost hit a deer. Get to my buddys house and someone has bad borrowed his straps. So I had to drive around a 45 min round trip to another guys house to steal his straps out of his shop. Almost ANOTHER deer on the way back. Finally get it loaded up. This is when I call the old lady and tell her that im leaving in the AM to get a car...
Just a little piece of info I left out. I was suppose to be getting married on that saturday the 18th. I was suppose to be getting ready for the wedding. Haircut rehearsal dinner and stuff on that friday. I blow off the hair cut to get a "****in old car" out of state. To say the least she was less then amuzed with my decision. But I had to get the car before my wedding that way it is a pre marrital ownership and she can't take it from me when she leaves me lol. Long story short everything went as planned. I got my hair cut a little later. Drove the car saturday to the wedding. Got Hitched to the girl that has put up with my cars for the past 8 years. She actually is starting to like the ol 49 too so thats good.
Anyways just wanted to share a bit on the story of the car and post some pics spent most of the honeymoon on here via my blackberry looking for ideas for the car.
Its still running the flat head 6 and 3 on the tree with OD. Not sure how the OD works Havent gotten around to playing with it yet. Car has cut coils and 2" blocks. But car was restored in around 1980. SUPER solid car has some scratches and dings but super solid. I love these things and finally have one of my own
...Will post some more pics later

Nice! That is a really above average car! I think it would take to a nice mid 50s super mild custom look really well.

Nice looking sedan, good color, sits right. Interesting that it IS a '49, but it has '50 parking light housings and front bumper guards. What does the back look like? Is the deck shaved?

Put some hubcaps and '50 parking lights on it, and you're done!

Its going to prolly get a dressed multi carbed flathead v8 and a 5 speed to keep it somewhat correct; and make it highway friendly. Get it down a little lower and give it a good mild custom job...
I was wanting to find one to build a wild custom but this one is too nice. So who knows might get a wild hair in a couple years and chop it and give it a good shave job but again I think this one is too nice. I would like some more pics and ideas for it...

Any links or pics would be great.
Also looking for suppliers or parts these are new to me. I've loved them for years just never really figured I'd own one.

Yea we noticed that too the parking light bezel dosent quite fit right to the grill/surround. My buddy had a 49 and pointed it out to me. But I like them.
The trunk is not shaved the handel and lock work and "r" is still over the key hole.
Trying to figure out what caps to run

    Overdrive....
If it still has the overdrive handle, while driving in third gear, pull the handle out from the dash. Let your foot off the gas and then back on the gas. It should click in to overdrive. Once you get used to it, you can do it in second gear also.
Warning.....when in overdrive, there is very little engine compression to slow you down when you let off the gas. Not a good idea to use it in town.
'way back when, overdrive was known as "free wheeling". My Durant had it.

Ben, I always called it maroon. Looks like it still has left hand drive. You changed the grill to a 54 pontiac instead of the 54 ford. Looks good.

Hey I've actually left like 25 messages to rebel rodz. I want a 12 inch chop and a 10 inch section and a 4 inch body lift and I want to use some wal mart task force wrenches to build my interior. I want a "rat" custom on a budget. Anyone know of any other numbers to get ahold of them?

Alrighty I'm torn. what are some things I should do to this car. The car is getting a 289/302 and a 5 speed. Wanted to put a flatty in it but I don't know much about them and want some decent power to send her down the road at 80 mph. Thining about doing some frenching and shaveing. Getting it down a bit lower. Any ideas need some motivation...

I don't understand the "to nice to chop " idea.....If you like the looks of a chopped shoe, then do it......just do your homework so it doesn't look like a tree fell on it, and it'll be even nicer than it is now........Oh Oh......now I'm gonna hear from all the chop haters, and people telling you to leave it alone......I'm just saying.....make it look like your favorite shoebox, what could be nicer than that ?......

    Jr's shoebox.

    Thats the Buster Litton ford.

Both of those cars are pretty much radical custom, with Jr's being milder(but a channeled shoebox is nothing to sneeze at when it comes to difficulty)

I personally would just lower it 2 to 4 inches and drive it, that way you wouldnt have to bother with a respray(as the paint looks nice from photos). If you want to start frenching stuff and nosing and decking it, than thats your call. There are kits to french 49-50 ford tailights, and I'm pretty sure you can use 52-54 merc headlight bezels without a problem for frenching the headlights(Im unsure about how much work you need to do for a 49-51 ford for these headlight bezels).

I like the idea of a small block for driveabillity, but if you didnt know there are adapters to put a t-5 behind your flathead. This being said, a small block will pretty much take whatever you throw at it, and can make really good hp. numbers for the pricey of bulding a flathead. Your call.

Good luck with the build! I love shoebox fords!
