Thanks TomCat.....that is what i'm talking about....i needed to see that wheel and tire combo....and you know what? I don't really like it afterall :(

  2. If you like the idea of chrome wheels and WWW, go with chrome reverse, otherwise it looks like you are trying too hard to be everything, to everyone.

Proof and one with chrome reverse, and an earlier PS of a Plymouth that I stole the wheels off of.

  3. Mario, the HAMB is very traditional on stuff, so I went thru the same thing back in February to now. But the site is super helpful for figuring out what makes a combo look like a pre-55 build, vs. a 60's build etc. Sadly mine looked like a early 90's build. :)

I got to admit I've raced at el mirage but never been to b-ville. Those wheels don't seem to lakes style to me, I see 'em more as a modern interpretation of something on a open wheeled stock car. I love 49-51 mercs but don't think of them as a race car though. I also don't think of www tires and alloy wheels as a perfect match, Thats JUST ME though. Lots of guys run 'em and love 'em.

Bottom line is that wheels bolt on easy enough. why not have a couple different sets and change the cars personality to suit your mood

Yes please no…another don’t run them on that car. I dig the Salt’s and put them on my ’55 and poo poo bye bye had to go. Now I have these f’d up slots :) Just did not work, I really think they should be kept to the flat style racers and I have seen some T’s that they work really well on. Theme man, theme. Stay the course.

As was said, design your own center caps. Then ask again what the prevailing thought is :)

I am fabbing up centers caps now and will post them and take the abuse. FUNNY!!!

Yeah early 90's was a tough time...it was like the 80's with a futuristic hangover. Your car is easy to get back to old school :)
Thanks so much for taking the time to photoshop those wheels i really appreciate it!

I'll second that. Do the car like a dry lakes or Bonneville car, it'll be killer with Salf Flats. Double Deep Black, blackwalls, nose down. Wide whites on those wheels won't look right, and the wheels will look wrong on a "custom" Merc. There's lots of taildragger Mercs, but a Bonneville theme'd one would be different.

haha, a minor pet peeve of mine also, kind of like calling an engine a motor. A starter is a motor, a windshield wiper actuator uses a MOTOR, you car has an ENGINE.... I think I first heard back when I was in high school in '91, or not, can't remember, but it stuck...

oh, and NO to the Bville "rims" and good luck!

This was at the StrayKat 500 this year. Totally cool, wicked bad sounding car. Belongs to a HAMB'er, but can't remember the name, he just got it running in time for the show. Help me here Mickey.....

    NOT polished
    NO white-walls
    NO skirts
NOT even the same looking car! That car is BAD***!!!

  18. Bob nailed it..........AND that Merc would flow better with some cool caps...........But, if it was my car I would have the Salt Flats AND another set.

"Rim" works just fine. geez guys....I like Mercs. I like the wheels(RIMS). Try em together. Break some new ground. Dare to be different. Wanna be like all the rest? what's right? what's wrong? It won't be long before it's the new trend. You could say you were the first.:)B

Well i'm learning that if you aren't traditional on this site, you are wrong. I just like to think outside the box, instead of just throwing some Caddy caps on it.

I almost put Salt Flats on my Buick, hell I even bought them. Then after actually looking at them on it I couldn't do it. They just weren't right. I feel the same way about a Merc.

I am with the "traditional" group here on the wide whites on a Merc. It is good to try not go with the usual Caddy caps idea. I agree with you there. There are a ton of "other" cap ideas out there that are not as commonly used. Keep in mind, not every traditional minded person here thinks you are wrong. Hell, you would be surprised how many "traditional" minded people on here run fat bias plys on the front and black wall radials on the back, cause the skirts cover them... or so they think.... hmmmm.. Moral of the story, ask for an opinion, you shall get one. May not be the one you are looking for, but none the less, you got one... Best of luck with your Merc. repeat after me white walls, white walls, white walls.....:)

They look great on hiboys, so just pull the fenders off the Merc - now you've got something really different, which was what you wanted, wasn't it:confused:. Photoshop anyone?:D

I've always liked the unpolished Salt Flats but always thought the polished versions looked cheap.

On a Merc I'd go a different route.... or at least stay away from the polished versions. There was black, unchopped Merc running unpolished Salt Flats with wide whites not long ago. Seems like it was from Tejas or So-Cal. Wasn't a bad looking car either.

  27. I like the look of the caps that are on it, just lower it, WWWs and go, they are smooth, shiny and don't distract from the body. Since it's a 4 dr. the hot rod theme of the carnut Merc pics with the unpolished SFSs doesn't work.

Yiu don't want anything too fussy for the wheels, or covers, something smooth like a Caddy Sombreros, or '59 Imperial, or 56-57 Lincoln... '57 Caddy or '59 Buick would be distracting... If you have to have exposed wheels, the chromies w/ spiders or the chromed smoothies that accept the original caps.

Just referring to the ones on my car!

  30. I'm coming from the Draglite/Pro Star/Bogart world too Mario (had a 9.4@144 98 Formula), so I like those rims. I have also looked at a Billet Specialty rim, can't remember the name of it, but in 18's, 19's or even 20's. But right now I plan to powdercoat my current GM 15x7's and then do some 'caps for now. I've been wrestling with the issue of running trad sombreros and am still on the fence. On the hamb the car would pretty generic, but locally on 'brero's my car would stand out since nobody rolls a 50-55 era chopped merc on the north side of chicago.
