I had a 305 in a '79 Camaro with stock heads, stock 308 rear end, th350 with an edelbrocck rpm performer intake, 600cfm Carter AFB compe***ion series carb, decent Lunati Cam can't remember lift / durat, Headers & Flowmaster's. I tell you that was a Quick little car...I think my fastest time in 1/4 mile was a 13.7 et which was pretty quick back then for a street car...smoked a few Mustangs for sure. I remember the thing sounded so radical & looked mean as hell too...that the guys in the Mustangs wouldn't even look at me at a stop light. If only they Knew what was under the hood they probably ****. I practicaly had to show proof that it wasn't a hopped up 350.

what isn't being said is that to have any kind of drivability, you need to have decent flow velocity all the way from the carbs to the head chambers in order for the carbs to have a decent vacuum signal to respond to. if any portion of the motor combination is "too big" - cam, intake runners, carbs - it won't drive for ****. I think the 305 is an excellent idea, since the long stroke pulls lots of air

that said, if yoiu go 30/30, 10:1, tall gears, it will run like a scalded ape, but at the price of elevated RPM

    goodl luck

One thing i have heard alot of you mention is how high reving this engine will be, i have been a 350 guy for most of my limited motor building experience, and with it if you get above 5500 rpms with a stock rotating ***emble you should be sweating bullets. is it the small journal crank or the short stroke that allows it to run at such high RPMs with no wories?

don't know if SR has got this far yet into his thinking but..I also recently got a tunnel ram and my Probillet HEI won't fit behind it.
I have heard some horror stories about the Pertronix kits (for an older smaller diameter dist) and was wondering what a good distributor would be?
    thanks!

There is a lot more to safely running high rpm than cubic inch and it costs money.

I ran an old Mallory Dual Point distributor in the Camaro.

I have a Unilite in mine now. I am happy with it, but I have heard stories of people burning them up and getting stranded. No problems on mine and simple to set up.

I was refering to running it on the street without it coughing and sputtering going down the road at low rpm's regular cruising speeds.. More of a show than go look.

Small duration cams work best with TR's on the street.

Get it all together and trailer it up to South Dakota. We'll blow your doors off with a single holley and a .460 lift hyrdaulic cam in a stock bottomend 327.

Sorry but I really think you'll hate it.

    Edit
Ok I read most of the thread and I see when you say street driven your really not expecting to have it real practical. Dump the power pack heads. Get the camel back heads. If you are running flat top pistons angle mill the heads .050 and flat mill and additional .025. You will end up with 55-59cc. It will make close to 10to1 to make the cam work better. The solid cam you have with .485 lift would work much better. You will have to check valve to piston clearance.

    Have fun!!!

Ok heres my combo..... (First the weight of the car makes a big difference in the drivability of the car) I have an Anglia (2330lbs w me in it) 0.40 over 350ci, ported fuely heads, 306 adv dur/ 230 @ 50,480 lift (Im running 1.6 ratio rockers) so its 512 lift, 110 lobe separation. Edelbrock TR with Holley 450's, 9.25-1 cr. Its not a daily driver.... but it drives awesome around town and on the on the hi-way. Went to a show resently 210 miles each way....averaged 18.1 miles to the gallon... 87octane too!!! Oh yeah 3.25-1 rearend gears a Glide and a 9 inch 2500 converter. Also its tire smoking fun and has an awesome idle. So IMO run the tunnel ram!!!!!!!

The small Accel HEI distributor works fine (the one with small points style cap)
