Just picked up this 58 Chevy truck. It has a 396 in it with auto trans. Looking for thoughts on chop (3-6"), and also the stance.......yikes.......be kind.
A good general idea for stance would be to keep the same amount of space between the lip of the wheel, and the bottom lip of the fenders all the way around. Grant it, that's not the case for all vehicles, but in your case it applies. My dad has a '57 chevy truck that's on the ground, but it has a nova clip under it. I'll try to scrape up a pic for ya.
Chop 3 at most and lower to stock level ,,least get that ass end down,,Nice looking truck Just lower the rear will make a world of difference
I wouldn't chop it if I were you. If you absolutely have to chop it....only a little bit. Lower it first and dial in your stance before you go chopping it.
Definately lower it first. Then look at how much needs to come out, I would say that a couple of inches might be it, but untill you drop it it's hard to be sure. depends on how much you can drop the thing.
Make sure you can come up with a windsheild that's going to fit before chopping, would be my only caveat.
Just drop it. See my avatar on how it could look (albeit mines an F100 but you get the gist) or look on the thread 'My sh**tty old shop truck gets a small makeover' and see the killer stance flamedabone has achieved (Sorry Ford truck again!) I would leave the chop until the last resort IMHO.
Chopping a truck like that will really limit your cockpit space. However, if you're 5 feet tall, you should not have any problems...
Drop it first. Maybe flip the rear axle for a quick 5". Might have to "C" notch it. Look like a nice truck.
That's a really nice lookin' 58. I'm wondering what the story is on why it's sitting so far up in the clouds. It may be a good idea to check with the aviation groups about the best way to get it safely back down to Mother Earth. Also, you may be required to file an IFR flight plan to drive it on a cloudy day. Seriously, correct the stance without going fad low. Straighten anything that's rough, invest in wheels and tires, chrome bumper, etc. and forget about the chop.
This was mine. G-body front stub. 5" bridge and axle flipped. Ran and drove great. You can probably get away with a c-notch if you don't want to go too low.
Drop it and throw some different wheels and tires on it and be done post a pic of it in the photoshop thread and im sure someone will do some magic to it to show you how it will look PS Mad, that truck is the balls
NO CHOPPY!!!! lower it yes then make the 396ci a hand grenade an run it (my 57' is runnin a 396/TH400 setup to) im not going to do anything to the body but drop it alittle and find some Crager SS
Agreed... BIG drop, NO chop. It's your truck though so do whatcha want. Just be aware that this is supposed to be one of the more difficult trucks to chop, so don't try it at home. Get someone reputable with experience chopping this cab or you could end up with a worthless butchered truck. Welcome from down in St. George!
If a chop were to happen it would be 1.5-2" max, then pancake the roof to help the profile it's a ton of work. Lower it 1st. Good, soild looking truck. The baby rat motor is cool.
