Help!!! We’re going to thrash tomorrow night but I want to be way ahead on throwing this tri-power on so it’s more a party and fire the car up thing and not all work. Yes I have stupidly removed all tension, pulleys etc…tried a 2x4 wedged against the flywheel and I can’t get an impact on there without lifting the block from the motor mounts. Tried fast raps on a tall cheater bar…someone knows!!! I am heading to the wood pile for something maybe to wedge where the flywheel will turn and lock up……..damn.

  2. Use a socket and breaker bar wedged against the crossmember then hit the starter for a quick second. I have done this and it works great and on the Performance years site, they all swear by this method.

remove a spark plug and stuff a soft rope down the hole until it fills the cylinder (leave some rope hanging out or you'll be pulling the head...lol). Breaker bar on the bolt and turn away. The piston will compress against the rope, which will ultimately keep the piston from going any further. Works like a charm.

Geez never heard that one before- you would want to make sure the piston is at TDC on compression and not exhaust or you might damage a valve if the rope compresses between the piston and valve face.
I always use a breaker bar and flick the ignition key like said already. Have you got a compressor? use a rattle gun.

  5. Use your Belt. Ya, the one you ware on to keep your Pants up, and a C Clamp. Hang your Buckle over the Top and to the Outside of the Frame rail and clamp it to the Frame. Now wrap the rest around the Outside of the Bottom Pulley. Now put the Breaker bar on with a piece of Pipe over the Handle. Now pull, guaranteed it will come loose. Don't hit yourself in the Head when it lets go. One done you might be using the next smaller hole but at least the Bolt will be out.

  6. I should have said to keep the Belt in line with the Pulley so it's a strait pull. P.S. I would "NEVER" put anything down a Cyl through a Plug hole. Just think about that for a second. Wifes tales are everywhere, most are just that.

  10. The old Indian Rope trick. I used this also but using the ignition became an easier faster method.

  11. Man, Ive done this one also!! When no starter was on the engine and the engine was out of the car.

breaker bar and tap the starter works best if possible. the crank bolt is torqued from the factory 150 lbs

Iv done this on a hemi with a 3/4" bolt that was locktighted and torqued. Pull the rockers off #1, pull the plug, put it on bottom dead center, screw your leak tester in and put 100psi in it. It will move a little but you will never move it far.

oops sorry!!! should have gotten back in here. Was ready to clean up last night and pops in my head that I am being really dumb and now everyone knows it :)

vice grips against the header and it still took a long piece of pipe. Next time I'll remember tapping the engine over BEFORE taking everything off. Thanks!!!
