55 chevy 1st gen 3100- steering box is in a bad place and looks like it will limit my engine choices. Any options for moving the box to fit something different under the hood? Theres a nice 455 Buick in the corner of pops' shop that would be real sweet in that old heap.........
Some guys move the steering box outboard enough to clear. I don't know if that will work with the big Buick, but its common with a small block Chev. Cl***ic Performance Parts offers a power steering setup that moves the steering box ahead of the axle, and that might be an option to consider. Its possible to use the stock column if you make a few modifications.
I've installed several Toyota Landcruiser steering boxes on the '55-'59 Chevy trucks, and it is always tight right next to the exhaust. The box goes in the same place as the stock box. It is a nice box that steers awesome. The way I have always solved that problem is to move the engine over to the right until you have clearance. I've moved them over up to two inches for big block clearance.
drive em makes a good point about moving the engine over. the engine in a 70-81 camaro is over to the right.
We used one of the set ups from cl***ic parts of america that relocates a 69-83 2wd fullsize truck box to the outside and front of the axle. Works out well.
