Can anyone tell me if there is supposed to be a gasket/grommet/adapter where the filler neck goes into the tank?

Kind of looks like a press fit, but it looks like it won't fit.

The car is a Ranchwagon with proper filler neck and proper gas tank.

    thanks

my 57 Fairlane 500 has a rubber grommet--would think the wagon would use the same design.

  3. My 59 Wagon has an O-Ring that goes on the Fill neck and press fits into the receiver on the Tank. I used spray silicone to get it together. Should be the same as 57.

  4. Strange, My 75 Fairlane has the Fill tube soldered as part of the tank. Not removable.

Thanks, any idea where I can get one of these grommets or o-rings?

According to Macs Antique Auto Parts, the rubber grommet is different on a wagon from a sedan. Everything else is different on a wagon gas tank. They sell the one for the sedan but don't list one for a wagon. A Ranchero uses the same gas tank. I had a hard time finding a sending unit.

The wagon/Ranchero tank is as you say, I think. My Custom tank is like the Fairlane tank, soldered together and non-removable. I think the wagon tanks are like that because of the length of the filler tube, being on the side of the car instead of under the bumper like the p***. cars. Lube it with silicone, it should go.

  8. I was looking for a reciept but no luck. I got it through Schucks, a local parts house by size. You need to be sure it's for Fuel so it don't turn to Jelly. I suppose a "good" NAPA store could help also. I remember the Dia. of the rubber being an issue. To Fat it wouldn't go in and to Small it wouldn't seel.

  9. If you put a Fairlane sending unit next to a Wagon unit the only difference is the shape of the arm. I bent a Fairlane arm to match my Wagon unit and it works just fine.

I did the same thing because the wagon one was not available.

I went to a plumbing supply store, (since I'm a plumber) and bought the O ring. Take your neck with you and find one from the ***ortment box that fits snug and won't wrinkle when pressed. Use some heat proof grease and press it in. It won't cost more than $1.50.
