Fonzi got me the hook up on a 460 Ford. The number on the block is D1VE 8015-A2B But all I can tell from web sites is that it is a '71 motor out of a Lincoln... and it could be a 429 or 460. Anyone know the poop on these things? TIA! Sam.
Hey SAM, I just read this on another forum: You need to get the #'s off the crank. A 4U or 4UA is a 429. 460's are 2Y, 2YA, 2YAB, 2YABC or 3Y. Pick up this book: HP Books, How to Rebuild Your FORD V8 351C- 351M-400-429-460. It has all the #'s and interchangability. I will check that out if u want. I am not sure where on the crank the number may be though..... Anyone know? FONZI
If it's a 4-bolt block its a 429- They never made a 4-bolt 460...but if ya swap cranks over, you can have one. Scotch
No way to know w/o checking the crank, but odds are it's a 460 if it was in a Lincoln...of course, cranks are easily swapped during rebuild.
Short of removing the oil pan, I guess you could try the coat hanger down the spark plug hole trick to measure the stroke. 429 = 3.59", and 460 = 3.85". The standard bore is the same on both engines at 4.36".
The others got ya covered before I saw this...the crank determines if it's a 429 or a 460. Either one is a great mill!
Sam. I had a VERY serious 460 back when I used to be a Ford man. You can make big giant bunches of power with em. The weakness is the exhaust ports. You can band-aid it with extra duration, and/or porting depending on what you are using the motor for. Lots of good aftermarket heads out now, it you have some budget to play with. I just bought a '57 F-100 off e-bay... went to pic it up yesterday (pics to follow). Plans are to build it to haul our digger... I want a big block, and it seems natural to put a 460 in it because they are pleantiful and cheap. So when I saw that one down in LA that the Fonz had on the cl***ifieds, I figured that it would be a great motor for the BFD hauler. (the price is right at $200) Anyway, the only thing that is keeping me from it is weather or not it is a real 460 and the fact that it is just a long block. My brother suggested that Pick-N-Pull motor might be a good choice because it'd come with all the extra ****... problem is finding a '70 or '71 motor, they are getting harder and harder to find. the block you want is DOVE-A it's the same as the 429 BOSS milled but not drilled for four bolt mains and extra webing around the mains,the heads you want are DOVE-C,I love the big fords I've driven some to over 200,000 miles, they say the 429 is supposed to wind up quicker with the shorter stroke. If the engine is from a 71 linc. there is a good chance it's the good one. But even if it's not it still a great starting point.Bob
