I've got this '62 Falcon and I'm trying to remove the ignition switch. Can anybody out there tell me what the trick is to getting this thing out?

  3. The bezil around it is probably a nut. T shallow 'slots' near the outside diameter means you run the bezel counter-clockwise (usually) while holding the switch still from the back, and it should unscrew. Otherwise, the bezel isprobably attached tot he switch body and there is a regular nut threaded onto the switch body from the back, but you would likely have figured that out on your own just by looking.

see the little hole right under where the key goes? turn your ignition to the acc position (dont remove the key, youll need it in a second). then insert a paperclip (straightened) into the hole. you should feel a little resistance, like you are pressing on a spring (if not, keep poking around until you feel it). now, whilst you have this spring pressed in with the clip, keep rotating that key anticlockwise. you should get another 1/4 turn beyond acc. you should then be able to pull the lock tumbler out. from there, things get REAL easy. just rotate the besel to unthread it from the rest of the ignition. if it's the original, its probably going to be a real pain get that tumbler out.

i swear falcons were designed by sadists. if you want some real fun and gymnastics, ask about changing a fuse (i am not kidding)

If I remember my ranchero correctly, the bezel is the retainer nut. Dearborn Classics sells the tool to remove it. Mr. wizard is right, removing the tumbler can be a real pain in the arse, but it will keep you from needing the tool.

First do you have the key? if you do. Do exactly as told on the tumbler removal. Press firmly from the back of the switch outward then turn the bezel about a quarter of a turn. The switch has a spring that pushes it away from the bezel.
