HI guys Ive just purchased a 60's style T bucket on sitting on a ..A model ch***is . can someone tell me exactly where the ch***is number is as i need it for rego. makes life easier with the authorities if i have the A model number. the ch***is has been painted in enamel and it cant be found .. and i dont want to go digging all over the place to find it .. ...........thanks
Thanks for moving this thread... i read that post it doesn't really help .. left or right side rail....maybe it could be any where..i don't want to strip the ch***is looking for it thanks any way
My vin was on the TOP of the driver side frame rail, about 25 to 30 inches back from the front crossmember, hope that helps..the cowl sits right on it or something on a model a, good luck!
G'day Most OZ Model A's didn't have ch***is numbers, they used the engine number as the ch***is number. I have owned lots of A's and none had a ch***is no. and only a couple had a body number which was on the firewall upper left hand side. So, you'll have to find an original engine to use as ch***is no. This has also been discussed on Ozrodders.com which you might like to check out. cheers, Phil
From what USA Model A restoration guys tell me and a few I've seen, the number is on frame top, USA drivers side just to the rear of the front body mount. Which means you have to lift the body to see it. 32's are USA drivers side on frame top just in front of the front body mount in plain sight. 39's are on the USA drivers side on frame top just opposite the front crossmember, also in plain sight. Last two from personal experience.
Mine was on the drivers side under the cowl, couldn't see it until the body was off and the same number was on the engine block.
It may look like its gone..or rusted away..but its there..deep into the steel...think forensics..cant file or grind numbers off a hand gun..they are there you just have to know what to do to see them again. if it becomes important enough there are scientific ways to recover them..it just takes some time. I recovered 3 out of my 6 numbers on mine
Canadian A's had only engine number, so no frame numbers in Australia; USA A's had engine number also stamped on frame at ***embly time.
Coupe Ute, does this answer your question? I'd heard that some A's didn't have numbers stamped on the ch***is but haven't seen one. Your boys down under agree that there weren't any stamped on the ch***is, I'd trust that. Especially knowing Tony (X38), the man knows his hot rods! In the US they were stamped on the top of the driver's side rail (like has been said), but you have to lift the body to see it (like has been said). You can't see it if you pull the wood floorboards out either, it's under the subframe rail. I don't think anyone understands why Ford did this, but most seem to agree it was intended to be a "hidden" VIN in case of theft.

Some of those numbers are stamped pretty faintly to start with. The serial number was ***igned to the engine/transmission unit, not the vehicle. All of the engine/trans units were built at the River Rouge plant in Michigan and shipped to ***embly plants all over the US. When the engine/trans unit was bolted into a ch***is, they literally had a guy with a hammer and a set of number stamps who copied the number from the engine/trans unit (flathead V8's had the number on the bell of the trans case above the clutch inspection window, don't have much experience with A's) onto the frame. It all depends on how hard the guy swung the hammer, and you hope he wasn't dyslexic--I'd bet that more than one car had a digit or two transposed.
