I hope some mopar / gear heads read this soon. I'm switching out my slant six to a new 360 (390hp) . Its built and it awsome. using tci converter and flywheel. The builder wants to use a 904 trans that he says he is building strong because a 727 torc will not fit. my concern is, in your fourm its been said 904s fail and cant handle hp. what do i need to ask builder or do i push for 727. 1968 dodge dart 83/4 rear thanks
The 904 can be built (and upgraded) to handle crazy HP and live, but is the expense really worth it? Unless you are after every last tenth of a second at the track, I would go the 727 route. Why "a 727 torc will not fit" I do not understand, as many 360 engines came with the 727 behind them from the factory in HD applications like big cars and light trucks. As you probably already know the 727 and 904 use different converters. I really like how the 10-3/4" factory high stall converters perform.
727 ,,904's are crap This shoudl give ya some good info. http://www.allpar.com/mopar/torqueflite.html
It's been awhile since you posted this but maybe this will help. The only cars that I'm aware of that a 727 is tight in is the pre-67 A body cars. A 727 should fit in just about any other application. The stock and super stock Mopar racers are using 904 goodies in there 727 automatics but those are super high dollar set ups. I'm thinking a well prepared stock 904 will handle 4-500 h.p. in a lighter car??? The reduced revolving mass offers a slight performance gain over the 727. If you use the aluminum aftermarket drums and Torrington bearings rather than bronze thrust washers they'll handle a bunch more h.p. yet. Good Luck
