Ive purchased a model A bed away back and so has my buddy and we were both wrapped with the quality and service. Our contact there was Mack Hils, Inc. jhummel@mackhils.com 660/263/7444 660/263/4403 fax Even Mack is a great guy, it is a shame they are not a little more adventureous with their parts for hot rodders.
Good work 29Nash we must have posted at almost the same time. Same old story for me always come in 2nd.
Ive used the 32 shortend bed execellent product. Just be sure to tell them if you are running original shocks .
I guess people are more interested in increasing their post count than actually reading a post and contributing something helpful. If you read my 1st post you would have seen I e-mailed them already and was told they have no pics.I do not need an address? I am curious as to the proportions(profile), and would like a pic before I fork over 1200 bucks. Thanks, Mark
why would their post count matter when they are trying to help you? And why say thanks after spewing that ********? Take a piece of cardboard, cut it to 55'', tape it to your truck, get your camera, push the ****on, and then you will have a profile picture. They were trying to help you with more contacts, and quality issues. They gave you a guy to e-mail. If you e-mail him that you have the money to spend on a bed, and you want to see pictures of one, and he doesnt send any, i would go elsewhere. How good can their beds be if they cant upload pictures from a digital camera. I think your looking for the ***hole journal.
Bought a shortened 32 pickup bed from Mack Hills a few years ago. They spaced the two center crossmembers so as to divide the bed floor into three even lengths. This made them too close together to allow the bed to sit down completely over the frame. Had to cut away and rebrace most of the crossmembers before we could get a correct fit. Called to tell them of their error in positioning the crossmembers. Lady I talked to told me the man who ***embled the beds was very experienced and did not make that kind of mistake. So much for trying to give constructive feedback. Before you buy make sure you talk to someone technically competent who will understand why those crossmembers need to be placed in the stock position. The bed was also a little out of square on the p***enger side. Over the years I have purchased 3 tailgates. One had a bow in it so bad that is rocked back and forth on a flat floor.
I only bought one small part from Mack Hils, a stake pocket. I told them it was for a 1935 Ford. It was wrong in so many ways that I called them and pointed out all the errors. They gave me a lame excuse. They claimed that there were early and late 1935 pockets. I really really doubt that. I talked to another guy who bought the metal skin for the floor. He said it was not square. When someone goes to the trouble to make a part, why in the HELL cant they put just a little more effort into it to make it RIGHT!
Well I went ahead & ordered my bed sides, will have to wait and see when they arrive . Other option was Refuge, and I wanted to avoid them ( too many horror stories) . Thanks, Mark
Well good luck and keep us posted. I am not a post chaser all the same. I hope it turns out well, since a set back is kinder disappointing. Last Refuge is an economy style box that is OK but you always get what you pay for. I suspect they will get their act together one day soon and become a viable optiion.
Bumping an old thread, but it's relevant. Anyone have photos of their Mack Hils bed? How close are they to a stock one? Are they "close enough" or are they "exact" to the originals? Particularly those of the '32 Ford variety.
Here is one that is on my dad's truck. I also suggest to have THEM ***emble it, we bought the bed as a kit, and without a jig, or templates we ended out taking it back to have them build it. Very good quailty, but expensive as well.
I really like the quality of the Mack 32 box. That said my personal opinion is that the shortened box at 55 is a bit short, especially with a stock top. I have done 2 pus and the first box was 56 inchs with a 2.5 inch chop and the second had a 3.5 inch chop and a 60 inch box which allowed me to use the stock horns with a 25 gallon SS custom fuel tank. ( maybe a little over kill) I really liked the appearance of the 60 inch length better. I bought a Last Refuge box and had it made 63 inchs for a stock height cab. The quality to price ratio was good and it was the second Last Refuge box I had purchased. Easy ***embly. I sold the long box as I (god help me) have decided to make a smaller version of Bob Rothenburgs (from St. Louis) 1 1/2 ton deuce stakebed truck.
