I'm about to put wipers in the Es*** and have seen the motor listed in the Speedway catalog. Has anyone had issues, good or bad, with the quality or durability of these units? I did a search in the archives but there wasn't much regarding Speedway's product. Thanks.
Can't help you, but I do have one sitting in my shop right now waiting to go in my A PU. Be interesting to see what the crew says on this one.
I put one in the Sedan and never had any problems...but I didn`t use it hardly at all.It didn`t sound all that good when running, but it never quit or burned up....
I bought a similar unit years ago from J. C. Whitney and wasn't able to use it on my '38 Ford pickup because the body of the motor was too long to allow the stock header panel to be mounted above the windshield. I solved the problem with a rear wiper motor from a Mitsubishi hatchback. It's made by Nippondenso, which makes a lot of electrical stuff for all of the Asian makes, so the same or similar rear wiper motor can probably be found on just about any of the Asian hatchback models. It fits nicely in place of the stock vacuum motor. The motor itself is about the size of a pack of 100's cigarettes and mounts at a right angle to the shaft so it doesn't interfere with anything. By opening up the gear case and moving the eccentric rod from one hole in the gear to the other, you can have either 90 degree or 110 degree sweep. Cool thing is that the stock Ford wiper arm will fit the shaft, have to use the Mitsubishi nut since it's metric, but the taper is the same so the Ford wiper arm will snug down on the shaft.
I used one on the 41. It was very loud and annoying. I crammed one of those foam rubber can coozies over it. Quieted it down dramatically.
There is a guy that advertises in the rod mags "cause rain happens" I think he's from Washington state. I bought his after frustrations with the cheapies and it works great! Smaller and more powerful. Looking for a Willys F Head engine, running or rebuildable PanheadGuy www.Shadyladylighting.com
The place in Washington is Pacific Designs Inc. The Mighty wiper kit is $144, motor only is about $92. The unit is 2 inch wide x 4 inch long x 1-1/2 inch thick. website is http://www.pacificwesterndesign.com . More expensive but better and fits under the header panel of coupes like the vac*** one. Has park, 110 degree sweep and one speed. A delay switch can be installed.
I bet the Speedway motor is 'Hecho in China' and a lot of Speedway's stuff has quality issues. You gets what you pays for and cheap is cheap for a reason. Buying a cheap product several times is more expensive than paying for a good one once.
Thanks for the feedback guys.Looks like I'll heading to the junk yard, failing that ,mighty wiper will get the call.As you say,you get what you pay for.
Hey 38fordpickup you wouldnt happen to have any pictures of your setup would you that is kinda the route i wanted go with the speedway wiper motor but was unsure if it would fit where i want it to abve the widshield. So yours sounds like a perfect fit.
The ones that work great are the rear wipers outta Japanese SUVs or Volvos......... and tiny Try to get one that's self parking I never use the big switch on the back ....... those little black push/pull ones work better. Merry Christmas One and All!!!
I had one from Speedway and one from Vintique. The Speedway one barely moves and is very noisy. The Vintique one is better and is still working OK. Next time I'm going to the junk yard. Besides it isn't a Hot Rod if it doesn't have some junkyard parts on it!
Bought one 2 or 3 years ago. It's either "on" or "off" which was a pain. Got caught in a huge rain storm on my way to the Sunset dragstrip. Got to about Akron and the wiper stopped! I reached up to turn it off and i couldn't even touch the motor it was so hot. I had it running for about an hour straight so maybe that had something to do with it?? And yes, it was hooked up correctly. So the remaining 2 hours of my trip were interesting. I personally think they're junk based on my situation. I may have gotten a ****py one.
Nope not a ****py one they are all junk. I had to take mine apart just to get it working, now if it is on too long I have to grab the wiper to stop it.........
I used one from a marine supply outfit. The more expensive chrome one had self park feature. Since I was using it in a roadster, didn't need dome lights so used the dome light feature of the headlight switch to turn the wipers on and off. One less switch on the dash. No noise or quality issues with that one.
Have one on my wife's '41 International trk. Worked ok for about 3 yrs. went to use it about 3 weeks ago nothing, so I guess it's a 50/50 chance.
somehow i suspected they were all a P.O.S. I didn't even bother sending it back to get another one. And forget rainex...unless you tilt the windshiled out a little, then you get cold rainy wind on you
I just sold a new in the box speedway wiper unit and they are the same off shore stuff that everyone sells cept speedy bills is cheaper. prolly cause they buy in bulk and sell a bunch.. Hey they work and they are noisy.. but they work.. I rarely used the ones ive had preferring rain x over the wiper but i had em on the cars and wired up just in case. It also helped me p*** my NSRA inspection ... Dave
