So after I started a project (48 chevy) that I could "afford" I found my dream project. Ruff but mostly complete with a clear ***le. First car is a 36 chevy master coupe. The story. It was found upside down near a mine. For what ever reason the car had a fire set in it. Ruined the top and burned all the wood out of it. The present owner cut the old top off and set the old top on ready to weld in. You will see in the pictures. The car is ruff, but again comes with a ***le as well as a 35 chevy master sedan. Pictures attached. Now comes my questions. The coupe does have a ford frame under it. cross member cut so the front end could be pinched down to fit. Not real keen about it. The sedan has the original un touched frame under it. In my reading it sounds like it will fit under the coupe since they are both masters. Any comments about this? Next the sedan has good fenders running boards and dash it. I think they will fit as well? Third the sedan being a 35 has suicide doors. Although the doors will not fit should I suicide the 36? I personally like the looks of suicide doors but are the 36's unique because they are not or vise versa? Fourth. The 36 coupe has had the center of the dash cut out of it. Reason , who knows it was found at a mine so they may have done it to get the drive train out of it easier for who knows what reason. Is there an after market company that sells fibergl*** one or should I graf in the 35 sedan dash? In the pictures, the 36 looks like it is sitting on wheels. They are just placed there. There is no drive train nor axles under the coupe. Where do i start? My thoughts.... Take the sedan apart and take as many parts of it as I think I will be able to use or just take the frame out from under it and get the coupe sitting on it so I can square everything up before welding the coupe together. Then channel the floors and tub the rear, The cars floors as well as the wheel wels are terrible so..... I need the grill as well as headlights any suggestions? I think It will take away from the 36 if I use fender mount lights instead of the grill mount lights. The cars are coming home this next weekend after x-mas. i plan to get them in a dry garage a do lots of thinking onnce they are side by side.
...as good as that sedan looks, I'd save it or peddle it as a whole instead of using it as a parts car, but that's just me. I like those 35-6 sedans.
If I was not so jazzed about the coupe I agree. I do not have a ***le for the 35, plus If I do part it, I will not chop on it so it could still make someone a good body. Add fenders and a frame and there ya go... Thanks for the opinion.
If ya' do the coupe, don't suicide the doors. You're gonna' have enough problems figuring out a way to replace the wood. Don't chop either one.
Build a new frame for the 36, use the ford one for an example and make it much better. Also no fibergl*** dash please. build a new piece or use the 35, or search for a 36 dash (swap meets, yards, etc...) and replace it. also if you want to drive it nice, use a MII front end and a 4 link or something in the rear. maybe an S10 rear end or such with high gear for highway. U wanted advice, there it was. Also did you get that off ebay?
Nice car Im pretty sure it's a 2 door sedan Keep the frame it's stronger than any Ford, doesnt need boxing I have a 35 Chevy and the s10 rear is too narrow Gary
I have a rear that should fit out of a 70 ish camaro nova. I am going to get ride of the ford frame and see if the sedan master frame will fit under the coupe master. Although differant years most of my reading says they are the same wheel lenght. If nothing else i can make a frame and use one or other as a templete. Thanks for the input about the dash. I am just sourcing parts. I have plans for the mustang II front end. I am going to hot rod it beings how at it stage there is no way to be original. I will not chop the top. But will probably channel it... Unless I have to build a frame, then I will just add a drop into it and add a c-notch theory to the rear.
I am diggin into the 36 coupe . I was wrong onthe year. I was dissapointed that all the substructure (floorpan) and body mounts where cut out and not reinforced or braced. So first things first, I cut the quarters out of my sedan including the body mounts. I tacked both panels in Now this weekend i will sit it on the new frame and see how it will fit. So I can start squaring up the body and finished welding in the body as well as adding lots of bracing so i can add steel to the car as well as the doors. Geez being a FNG I atleast learned to brace brace brace. I hope I can get this car straight again. I think I am on the right track. Any other suggestions?
Thats looks like one heck of a project, i'am sure it will be worth it though once your done with it. Those old Chevys are cool looking cars that you don't see all the time. Keep the progress pics comming
I am not sure about '36 but on a '35 it would be a Standard with regulars doors and a Master should be suicide doors. At any rate, you can determine which one it is by measuring the wheel base: 35 Standard 107" 35 Master 113" 36 Standard 109" 36 Master 113" Kathy
I agree. I would build both, not cut one up to save the other. They both look like they can be salvageable w/ a little work. I would look to cut the hump out of the sedan and slope it down flat, it would make it look great.
Unfortunatly the sedan is now in pieces. It was hard to cut on it but I am very motivated to get the coupe going. Now with quarters from the sedan tacked into the coupe. I finally have body mounts to work with. THe frame frame the sedan measures out to be the one I need for the coupe. So the body of the sedan came off and now I will pull the motor and clean it up to get under the coupe. Then.... i can get the coupe lined back up and brace brace brace..... Thanks for all the input I will post up in a few days.
