Any hambers that are into sand dune riding? Its one of my co-hobbies.
It seems to me that my sand machine is much like my hotrod as that it takes my time on this planet alot easier to bear ..Something different but yet the same. I've met alot of cool people in the dunes and most who share the same love of the asphalt pounding as dune thrashing:D

  2. yep. i only have quads though.

Grew up hitting Gordon's Well and Glamis pretty regularly... it's been 10 years since I've been out there, and I hear it's full of idiots now, but I'm pretty sure there were lots of idiots there in the 80's too!

Still have my '86 250R quad... just no time to prep it and ride right now... :(

  7. I used to live in Borrego Springs in the 70's and 80's. I could leave from my back door and drive the buggy out to Ocotillo Wells.

Often went camping to Glamis and Rosarita Beach Mexico. Here's some of my old sand machines. The Blazer had a set of 4 paddles and would go where buggies couldn't.

I ride motocross and have rode in some sand pits. alot of fun same type of surface... but different mode of transportation

  9. They are my favorite rides.

They will dance around in really bad stuff that would sink a 4-wheel Drive, and won't rattle your teeth like a Jeep would.
You dont even have to slow down for bumps.

I put a couple of ours in our local after-dark Christmas LIGHTS PARADE a few years ago.

2003 If anyone spotted a Studebaker truck towing a CAT IN THE HAT vehicle just before the parade, that was me.

My youngest son was a passenger in mine, and my friend Mary was driving the second one.

HEY- IF ANYONE HERE HAS ANY VIDEO OF THE 2003 LIGHTS PARADE IN CARBONDALE ILLINOIS LET ME KNOW.

I WILL GLADLY PAY FOR ANY COPIES OF OUR BUGGIES IN THE PARADE.

The one I was driving was decorated like a Cat-In-The-Hat vehicle.
I made a 3 ft diam by 4-1/2 foot tall steel HAT, bolted it to the roof, and upholstered the HAT on top of the dune buggy with red and white felt stripes to look exactly the hat that the Cat In The Hat wore.

The tall (and heavy) red-and-white HAT on top of the mud buggy (and the rear mounted engine) made it easier to do wheelies.

It was a sight to see with Christmas lights all over it, and a huge hat on top, just like something the Cat In The Hat would drive.

As the parade slowly moved along, I would inch forward a bit, rev the engine about three times, pop the front end high up in the air, then let the wheels come back down.

The buggies never went over 2-3 MPH, about walking speed, and I never held a wheelie over about 10-12 feet long, but the effect on the crowd was AMAZING.

In all the years before when I brought my kids to see it, it was a quiet peaceful affair.

When we pulled the dune buggies onto Main St and popped the first wheelie, the crowd went NUTS!

All along Main Street the crowd was yelling and yelling. "DO IT!" "DO IT!" "DO IT!"

    "WHEELIE! WHEELIE WHEELIE!"

"DO IT!" "DO IT!" "DO IT!"

    "WHEELIE! WHEELIE WHEELIE!"

"DO IT!" "DO IT!" "DO IT!"

It was incredible. All the yelling and cheering. I now understand why my oldest son liked playing football in front of large crowds.

All the way across town the yelling and cheering followed us.

After the end, after we drove the mile or two back to the staging area (SIU parking lot), I noticed that still more parade floats were still leaving the parking lot to begin their parade-trip, the parade was that long.
I thought "IWANT TO DO THAT AGAIN", and started to pull back in line again to make another pass near the back end of the parade.
I was sneaking back in to make a second pass!

My partners turned chicken, and talked me out of making a second pass.

I have been kicking myself ever since.
Just imagine the crowd reaction of seeing the Cat-In-The-Hat-Mobile sneaking back in the parade to do the show again.

That would have been perfectly "in character" for a mischevious creature like The Cat In The Hat and would have the crowd really going.

I am mad at myself for missing that one-in-a-lifetime perfect chance to really have something to talk about

If I could license one here, I would use it as my daily car. Without the costume of course. Disguised as an anonymous dune buggy.

Unfortunately we have to tow them over 2 hrs away to another state to find any decent place to ride.

If I ever manage to free myself from Illinois, the Land of Racketeering and One-Party-Rule, what would be a good state I could move to that has some old fashioned freedom, low taxes, and good off-roading?

HEY- IF ANYONE HERE HAS ANY VIDEO OF THE 2003 LIGHTS PARADE IN CARBONDALE ILLINOIS LET ME KNOW.

I WILL GLADLY PAY FOR ANY COPIES OF OUR BUGGIES IN THE PARADE.

DOES ANYONE HERE HAVE ANY FRIENDS THAT MAY HAVE FILMED THE 2003 PARADE?

PLEASE FIND THEM AND HELP ME GET A COPY!!

So just move across the river into Mo. Lots of off road parks. And I know for a fact you can have a rail buggy licensed. Check my avatar. Now the low taxes thing, have to wait and see on that one, new democrat governor you know. :D

Dunes? WTF is that...There are some in Michigan though...

  12. I wish we had some sand around here. I don't quite get the "let's all get drunk and go Muddin" 4X4 thing that's so popular around here and rock craweling just don't look like fun to me. But dune buggies and sand rails, I could get into.

i've been going to glamis since 1978. it used to be a great place. now its full of yuppies, wannabees, and douchebags. dont get me wrong its still fun but not like it use to be. you never used to have to worry about some drunk guy there for the first time in a 500hp buggy.

  14. No dunes, just Volcanoes and cold lava floes, here! Just think, on Padre Island in Texas you would be thrown in jail for driving on a dune!

You must be talkin about Florence, Winchester Bay, Reedsport, CoosBay? HoneymanCampground? Drink lots of beer and roll out the back of the park on the Quads. Killer! Great time there during the warm summer months. We incorporate a couple of car shows on the same weekends. I used to think we spent a lot on Cars. Some of those guys show up with some unbeleivable Stuff. And the tow rigs? WOW!

  16. Yes a long time ago, 60's early 70s built a flintstone out of a 57 Bug had lots of fun at Sand Lake and all the other places 9 inch mentioned then it got too crowded. there are 10,000 acers of dunes in Christmas Vally, maybe I'll go out there next year.

I had a sand rail up till about 15 years ago. Most fun I ever had with my clothes on. We used to go out west of Kermit when I lived in Lubbock.

I have a Dune Buggy. Mid 60s Alameda body on a '61 Beetle. Drive it mostly on the street, but it does insane donuts in the dirt. :D

  30. You ever see any "TomPro" mini-buggies there?

They have Suzuki Hayabusa 4 banger engines, with or w/o turbo.
Long travel suspension. Pretty wicked but stupid expensive.
