Ive been hearing people around here talk about a new dragstrip being built in Minnesota. Its supose to be in Owatanna, right next to Cabellas, and the old airplane museum. well see if it happens, but i heard its truly a go!! TITUS
Finally, good news about a NEW strip opening instead of one with infinite history bein turned into a shopping mall parking lot. You just made my day Titus.
no. it's not going to be in owatonna anymore..too many people against it here.. i 've been told it is going to be by the Ellendale exit on I-35 , just north of the Amoco station
I heard that they want to put it up in big lake. also someone has bought the rights to the name minnesota dragways. if i remember right they even have the land but are trying to get through the city.
Who cares Steve when your cool you dont need to go fast, besides the wind will just mess up the pomp !!!
Five or six years ago I was running at Grove Creek and two guys racing their car there were saying they were starting up a new drag strip. It was to be called Minnesota Dragways and be located just off I-35 near Elko. They had a web site with nice blueprints of the place. They even gave me a bumper sticker. They said they were waiting for the crops to be harvested off the rented land, then the bulldozers would move in. Well, no earth has been moved yet. So, don't get too excited.
I don't think anything will be opening up anytime soon, I've been hearing rumors for the last couples years.
pssssssstttt ( that thread is 4 years old ) times have changed since then and not for the best support the strips you have locally before they are all gone Like www.thundervalleydragways.com --Marion , South Dakota been there since 1967 !!
yes. this thread is four years old... times have changed, but not the plans of the group looking to build a new quarter mile track. they have been fighting with the state, counties, insurance, lawyers... they have three sites they have "hold it for me" cash invested in... now its the legal bullshit getting in the way. once they get one of the sites in order, they'll start bustin sod an layin the lanes.
On a different note... there has been talks of a new dragstrip here up north near Hibbing, MN for a few years also. It's supposed to be part of a new "motorplex" that will include an oval stock car track, a motorcross track, a snowcross track, and a road course for use by the Hibbing Community College law enforcement program as a training area. http://www.cirimn.com/projects/tourism/169motor/
Theres a chunk of land along highway 10 south of Big lake thats in the process of being aproved for motorplex development. There was a city council meeting recently not sure how it went.Burl.
Amen to that BIG DAD, but you should really get some sleep. Posting at 1:58 am, did you think Santa had some Hemi parts and you were going to jump him?
There is also some talk about a track being built up on the border in Worth County Iowa next to the casino. As I understand it the property has local zoning approval. I'm not sure what the latest status is on that one.
Santa left me a lump a coal I'd like to see new strips built but, to be realistic , with everything I hear and read in the racing industry ..No matter what you want to believe I doubt you will see any new ones built anywhere several have closed forever in the last two years
There was an "outlaw" strip near Keewatin in '95 and '96. We ran the Pontiac rail there a few times. Had a ball ! However, it wasn't "fancy" enough for the prima donna drag racers who were used to the nicer facilities at B.I.R. and other venues so, without enough support, it was shuttered.
There have been rumors of new strips for over 20 years.Remember the strip that was to be built by Sandstone? Or the one west of Rogers? A car club I belong to even got suckered into sending a check to the start up fund.Sad to say but I seriously doubt a new track will happen. These things get hyped every 5-7 years, get folks excited then nothing else happens. The best thing that can be done is support BIR.
Sorry to bring up an OLD thread, but I figured I would let others know that funding for this project was actually OK'd by the IRRRB this week... hopefully it actually happens... we'll see.
