Humbolt, you'll have to watch the movie again... The main characters are Steve and Kirt... but the wolfman, in my opinion, ties it all together... And the reason you hear the train is because there is a train track that runs right down through the middle of 9th Street in Modesto... just blocks away from the drag... And, FWIW, there is no Rear view mirror in the '55... Ok, last question... what is the name of the theater in the Movie... hint, it was the boyhood theater of George Lucas (I saw Pinochio there when I was a kid), it is still there and being renovated, and Lucas has an exact duplicate of it at his Skywalker Ranch... Sam.

[/ QUOTE ] Is it "San Raphel"? Although the State theater is the ol' Modesto theater. Maybe it did say "State" in the movie... That's right, forgot how close to McHenry Av. those tracks run. No rear view mirror? Hmmm.. it seemed like the tiny skull was hanging from some where, like the headliner.
According to the extras on the DVD version (a must have). Q: Why does Toad crash the Vespa. A: He was meant to leave it in top gear and pop the clutch so it would just jerk a little bit, but he mistakenly put it in first, popped the clutch and it took off. That's why it looks so realistic, because it WAS! One of the posts also mentions that the studios were covered over. That's not correct. The ENTIRE film was actually shot at night, with the cinematographer flying up from his day job to shoot AG. He must have had some really good medication happening! In the end it worked out real good as everyone looked completely stuffed after filming nights for six weeks, so when the sun's coming up after everyone had been up all night, all the actors looked like they'd been up all night. THEY HAD BEEN and then some! I might have to go watch it again tonight.
[ QUOTE ] The band was Flash Caddilac and the Continental Kits(Kids?). They later apeared on Happy Days as Johnny Fish and the Fins. I heard they still play. [/ QUOTE ] It's Continental Kids Heres on e for ya, What state is Flash Caddilac really From?
Hey Krupanut, Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids were from Colorado. Colorado Springs if I'm not mistaken. There is a band called the Continental Kids that still plays the clubs around here once in awhile, maybe an original member or two but that's about it. The leader of the original band died a few years ago. sled
Right on Sled. A couple of the "kids" were from Niwot, and as a kid growing up in Longmont I got to see them play often. They were great musicans, and it was easy to look past the whole sha-na-na cheese factor.
ok heres an easy one (well i know the answer anyway)what are the two connections to `tarzan` in the film...ones obvious the other not too obvious... monkey
Scallop 53.... [ QUOTE ] Here's one for ya!!!! When Toad is at the liquor store and first walks in,what is the mistake made in the scene? DAN [/ QUOTE ] I believe its something to do with a sign on the door that says either pull or push, and toad does the opposite and the door still opens. I dont know if this was what you were thinkin of but its in there...................Briggs
by the way, that chick that is riding with falfa during the toad confrontation says something like "hey Ki Ki" and someone said that she says "aint he neat." I dont think that is right. What DOES she actually say??? This post is AWESOME
It took me a long time to figure out what Debbie was saying to Toad when she asks "Can it lay rubber?"
Straight from the script..she DOES say ain't he neat. [ QUOTE ] CRUISING MAIN STREET--STEVE'S '58 CHEVYTerry is looking and feeling like he's got it made. He downshifts and slows for a red light. A very mean-looking black '55 Chevy--blown, scooped and slicked--pulls up next to him. The driver, Bob Falfa, has a gum-chewing girlfriend sitting almost on top of him. Terry challenges the '55 Chevy by revving his engine. Bob Falfa doesn't even look over. He revs his engine--which sounds like a cross between a Boeing 707 and a SuperChief. Terry can't believe it. He quits revving his engine--feeling deflated. Terry looks over at the snotty grin on Falfa's girlfriends' face. GIRLFRIEND: Ain't he neat? Terry doesn't say anything and Bob Falfa glares over at him. FALFA: Hey, you know a guy around here with a piss yellow deuce coupe--supposed to be hot stuff? TERRY: You mean John Milner? Falfa nods slowly. Hey, nobody can beat him, man. He's got the fastest-- FALFA: I ain't nobody, dork. Right? TERRY: Right... FALFA: Hey, you see this Milner, you tell him I'm lookin' for him, huh? Tell him I aim to blow his ass right off the road. GIRLFRIEND (giving another snotty smile): Ain't he neat? Terry doesn't say anything. There's another incredible scream as Falfa roars off, leaving Terry to stare through his smoke. Terry accelerates the '58 Chevy--at a prudent speed. [/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, that's actually my favorite scene in the whole movie, when Falfa leaves the line in front of Toad. The effect of witnessing the acceleration was incredable. The thunderclap effect of that '55 does it for me. No burn out, no reaction time, no accelleration, it just hooks up and GOES - KABOOM!
You guys are all punk ass bastards! I had a perfectly well planned PRODUCTIVE evening set and I broke down and watched the damn movie AGAIN ! BASTARDS BASTARDS BASTARDS!! ...There's actually a bit I hadn't picked up on before...like the part with Milner tellin Toad at Paradise Road (after the fight with the thieves) "man, look at your glasses!" That's damn hilarious stuff. Something about the delivery on that.. I'm also just really amazed at the detailed analysis of AG on this thread....I am definitely at home here...Thanks fellas
You know... I've watched the movie more than most, and what it seems like on this thread, not as much as some! I had no IDEA this post would be such a big hit, but I'm very pleased to see so many of you enjoy this classic! Right when I see Mels Drive-in and 'rock around the clock' kicks in, I just feel at peace. Heres a general question for everyone. Who were your favorite charactors in the film if you could only pick 3, and why? My first pick would have to be the obvious one, Milner. I liked him for the obvious reasons too. I think one of the best shot scenes of Milner is right at the gas station, before he goes off to paradise road. Looking down inside the window at John as he smokes.... too cool Second would be Toad. You gotta love that guy, he never gives up, and never sees himself as a nerd. Third would be the leader of the Pharoahs. Hes way cool as well, and not a bully or a show off. I just wish there was more of that guy and his 'gang' in the movie. Anyway those are my picks in my own opinion. Whats yours?
Paul Lemat should have won an Oscar, not because I'm such a fan of the movie, but because he was that good.
AG is magical. When I get down,I watch the movie and I'm stoked for months!!!! Someday Paul LeMat will be recognized for that outstanding role. He's the man!!!!!!! Monster, that's my favorite shot in the movie, too.Anytime he's peeking out of that chopped top,he looks so cool. I can't pick second or third,it's a tough choice.
Favorite characters from AG??? Only 3, eh??? 1. Bob Falfa...He was the bold and cocky challenger come to town for a showdown with local hero! His car was bar-none the BADDEST ride in the movie and woulda flat SMOKED that chicken coupe if the Rules of Hollywood would allow the outlaw to beat the "good guy" once in a while! Hell, even Milner knew he was gettin' his hat handed to him!! 2. The lead Pharoh dude... Another "bad guy" of sorts, but one that we all secretly admire! He had the Look, the Attitude, and the Balls...the Real Deal in a satin jacket! 3. Toad...He was so pathetic and reeked of such geekdom that you just had to sorta automatically LIKE the guy! He rode a scooter while others had cars, and he went clumsily along through his night being the token Dork...but ended up with the hottest gal in the movie, anyway! Those were my three faves...now the three I liked LEAST... 1. Steve Bollander...what a self-absorbed prick! Obviously a rich kid used to getting his way. Lame as shit. Even called his late model custom a "Rod" through the whole movie. Didn't deserve the car OR Cindy Williams! Prick! 2. Richard Dreyfuss' character...added little or nothing to the story. Spent his time trying to fit in with guys way cooler than him and chasing a pipe dream in a white 56 T-bird. Didn't know what he was gonna do from one minute to the next and just sorta took up space on the screen. Drove a lame ass import that didn't run worth crap, too! 3. Holstein...What a lousy cop! ROSCO had more integrity and backbone than this guy! A King-Shit Prick who would be NOTHING without his gun and badge...I bet Toad coulda kicked his ass! Movie cops need to command RESPECT...like Buford T Justice or Buford Pusser, to name a couple! Hey, not exactly the way most Graffiti Heads will see it, but those are my picks, since ya asked!!
Three favorite characters. 1. Milner...nuff said. 2. Toad, for reasons stated above. 3. Wolfman...cause he set the tone, and the scene with him and Curt, when Curt leaves the station, and peeks in and sees him on the mike gave me goosebumps.
Of course AG was great! It had to be. It was sorta Lucas' last chance to do well at the studio. And.....he made the hat trick. It's well known history that the success of AG allowed him to make the somewhat experimental and fantastically successful STAR WARS. Of course then he went on to participate in "1941"....
top 3 favorite charactors: Joe the Pharaoh Carlos the Pharaoh Ants the Pharaoh Steve Bolander: Nerd Kurt: fucking square Toad: fucking dork Milner: too pretty Falfa: too hick Debra: ho Carol: jailbait
This thread is GOODE!!Thanx HAMBERS! By the way,Do you know about the history of Joe's Mercury? I want to know...
Brian Setzer owned that Merc for a while. Had it redone slightly with "Runaway Boy" lettered on the quarter panel. Don't know if he still owns it or not.
It woulda been cool if Newbomb Turk coulda been in AG. A little more for the trivia buffs: What was the movie being advertised outside of the movie theatre when Milner was getting a ticket? Is it wrong for the movie and if so, then why? Newbomb rules.... JT.
I think Setzer also used the car in the video for "I Won't Stand In Your Way"...his Model A was in that one, too. One of their best songs AND best videos!
I think the beauty of that Merc was that it was no beauty. Not well done, lousy chop and typical of what most regular guys had back then. How many local cars can you remember that were perfectly done? Even Miners coupe was rough around the edges, like it should have been. Only the '55 really came across as a well done rich kids car.Just my opinion.
