I found this today while fixing some work done by the previous owner of my 51 Chevy. The lesson is clear. Always remember that when you are slopping fiberglass and tons of Bondo over rusty metal, be sure that you put large nails in it to hold it all together!!

That reinforces my belief that its better to leave the rust as is. Slows down the rot, and its faster than doing a bunch of body work.

Old wire from the screen door always works a treat add a little alumium foil and screwed up newspaper and cardboard and you got yourself a sweet panel and body job reading for selling to some poor unsuspecting soul.
Like I said before this exactly why some States still keep the death penalty on their statutes.

So you haven't got down to the brass tacks yet ? If he'd used duplex nails, he could have pulled them out.

I've seen nails in there, but the one i''ve seen the most of, and wished i had a pic of, is mig wire with loops in it about every 6-8 inches for good bonding, and put into the fiberglass. I have found that it does help....hehehehe and is very easy to hide.

Nails work OK for small rust holes, but it wastes a lot of bondo when it oozes through the hole. Take Red Greens advice. Duct Tape will fix anything, even big rust holes with a nice Skim Coat of bondo. I think I've seen just about every patch trick in the book. Roof flashing, wire screen, cardboard, newspaper, feedsacks, old license plates, wood paneling, and even drywall mud or cement. I even seen a nice pair of fins on a California Custom 50 Chevy fastback outlined with #9 wire, then stacked beer cans and duct tape, all smoothed over with bondo and topped with Kandy Paint. I won't say who owned it.

Built a 50 chevy truck for someone else. He bought it from a coal miner in WVA. the floor was torched out of the side of a caterpillar, still had the yellow paint. Inside one of the fenders was a glob of cement. I thought it had just gotten slung up there from the road. Went to go knock it out, it was patching a hole in the lower fender.

My Model A had huge bolts inside the concrete the previous owner had poured into the rear inner fender wells...
We pulled it out and all the pieces were formed perfectly.
We shouldve made fiberglass duplicates and sold them to speedway.

i won't mention the rod shop by name, but it's a little east of the mississippi river on I-40.i bought a ready to go hot rod from them and it looked sweet, took it off the trailer, drove it to town, frame broke at the a-arm.i started peeling layers of aluminum tape off the frame.it was smoothed over an old crack and then under coating was sparyed over that.the guy was a real jerk and said it was my fault for not looking...hell ,i'm nearly 60 and blind as a bat...how could i see under that a-arm.

I bet that makes you excited about what else you are gonna find. I was welding a hole on the floor board of my 49 and wondered why it kept smoking after laying the bead....nice big fat fiberglass repair holding the floorboard in. They toe boards were only spot welded in and then fiberglassed over.

good luck. its never fun to clean up someones elses 1/2 asst work.

  30. Does it take a special welder to weld bondo? I'm going down to Harbor Freigt in the morning and see if I can get me one.
