No not yet. Working on that now to. Just have to get all my paperwork for the state taken care of. Now that I have time I am going to to that this week. That way I can open an account at the bank and start using that name.

I was laid off in 2000, from the mag publishing industry, and having a graphic art background, I decided I didn't need a bi-weekly paycheck and the corportate BS that goes with it...I lit out on my own...and never looked back.

Someone here said all you need is a computer and some programs...I'm here to tell you that you don't even need that...I do not do any of my work on a computer...it's all hand work and pen and ink...'back to basics' sorta.

One good thing about getting laid off...a decision has been made FOR you...only you make something positive out of it...

Hmm, interesting that my man posted a similar thread that was deleted within the hour. Sorry to be a sourpuss, but shit is bad for everyone. If you want a job, look in your local classifieds, not on a hotrod forum. Good luck to you and yours, but please, save it. We are all suffering together.

PM me about doing a shirt design or Rod-O-Rama. Had Hidden do some for this last set. I'd rather help a HAMB artist out.

    Hey Zumo...

Here's a guy I've use for business cards and postcards... really nice quality, heavy stock with a gloss coating on both sides. Business cards are 2000 for less than $100.

    www.qualityprintingcheap.com

    Hope this help you some!

  10. Something to try... Lawyers always need materails to present evidence in court... they need professional looking display boards and Powerpoint presentations showing how an accident happened or whatever... Hit up the big firms... easy work, and they pay well.

I feel your pain. Been laid off since late June. I'm a builder in the second most inflated area in the country.
I might get lucky and get back in with my old company, they're doing well lately, ExxonMobil...

I spit water all over the keyboard and about pee'd my pants. That is funny .:D

Seriously, sorry about the layoff, keep the faith man. Try it on your own if you can, I did it in 1970 and retired in 2000 at 53. In these economic times as stated earlier there are a lot of companys that will utilize freelance over salaried employees. Best of luck and I hope you do win the lottery.

Guess what Firetop, look where I live....and I too am unemployed!
Mine is unique though as I'm in Logistics/Transportation. I'm the guy in the office telling drivers where to go pickup and deliver, it's like playing chess all damn day. Now, freight is like rust, it never sleeps. BUT, you have to be in the right spot.
Zumo, I moved from Dallas when my former company closed their DFW terminal. I was lucky in that I had planned to move to Austin anyway cuz this is where my fiance' lives, so the severance pay was like they were paying me to move. My job ended the end of August and I got married in Sept. Have been looking but have found out what I had feared before I ever moved, that Austin is a Transportation Black Hole.
I still have some severance pay and my wife is in the I.T. industry, so we aren't starving, but it sure is making me feel pretty god damn useless.
I feel like Hazel, that house cleaner on that TV show back in the early 60's.
Since we aren't buying a house til next Sept, I have no garage to go work out my stress either and folding clothes just isn't dirty enough.
You keep at it up there and I'll keep at it down here.
The wife and I were talking about me going back to school. She said that this would be a perfect time to start a new career, I think she's right.
We'll see. Who knows what's next?!

Oh, speaking of Austin, the link in my sig is for places to go while at the Round Up in April, have a look at it guys and gals. If you have a suggested place, Post It!

  18. I remember when the recruiting firm I worked for in 1997 went into bankruptcy. Four of us founded our own firm and it's still going, have about 11 people right now. We've had to tighten the belt and get rid of some luxuries but we are doing okay.

Best thing to do when you are laid off is have an extremely good time for three days. After that polish up the resume and start sending them off. I'd suggest you send 50-100 a week, hoping for a 5-10% response rate.

I think that we are near bottom right now. Just have to get through the next 4-5 months and I think we'll see spending pick up.

I am also a fan of having secondary sources of income, ie. consulting, selling stuff, web sites, etc., try some different things. I sold a few websites last year for a good sum.

    my best advice.....

put your portfolio together... tighten up that resume...

and then look for any job that will offer you a measure of security, design or otherwise. the reasons why i say tighten up the portfolio and look for a job that's not necessarily in design is that at the moment, you're looking for a bit more of financial stability at least for the short term.

if a great opportunity comes along that you can show off what you can do in graphic design, take it. but no sense in cutting off all your options to make a decent living. sometimes it just comes down to timing.

i've been doing a non design job for 4 months, my first non-design job in over a decade. and i have to say - i'm a bit surprised - my passion for my work has increased tenfold, and doing it outside of my normal fulltime work is easy. when you don't have to take on just any project to pay the bills, you handpick your projects, and you do more things that interest you.

other than that, keep your chin up, and never stop trying to make it work. shit happens quite often in our industry but eventually, something will pay off.

Thanks for all the advise. Some of that stuff I hadn't thought of. Right now I am trying to get a design job but I can also be a Network Technition of even a Diesel Mechanic and I hav emy own tools so I am not doing so bad as some folks.

I have used some time to work on my truck. I had not had a chance since I had been so busy with work during the day. I was getting ready to get my transmission rebuilt but have to put that on hold for now.

I have been on one interview so far and they are ready to make a decision on Monday so we'll see. Otherwise I will keep shooting out the resumes.

  21. Zumo, keep your head up man. Im about to move back in with my parents due to the economic downfall recently. I am only 23, so its not too bad, but its rough. Cant find a job as a mechanic, body technician, welder, fabricator, hot rod shop, anywhere. You should like you will be alright, just stay positive.

On another note, i didnt know you were on here. I havent been frequenting the HAMB much, but I am on 67-72chevytrucks.com as droppedchoppedpanel(tried to change my name, dont want to shell out cash to change it, oh well, soon enough). I had the 6" chopped bagged 65 chevy panel. Anyway, good to see you around.

Look at starting a home based business, do some brochures with your work on them, deliver them or mail them to local businesses, get creative and price your work fairly and you should do okay. Homebased businesses are becoming very popular and you can make a decent living. You can check more by googling it. Or if you want more specific info and advice PM me with your email address.
