According to several local auto paint stores, they will not be allowed to sell you solvent based automotive paint base/color coat after Jan 1st 2009. Of course being the land of fruit and nuts under the rule of former Hummer poster boy and now green machine Ahhhnold, you can continue to buy and use catalyzed primers, sealers and clear coat, or so I am told. How much sense does that make?

Anyway, I am concerned that water based base coat may not fade at the same rate as solvent based colors (despite the UV protectants) and I have hear concerns on this issue from several pro painters. So I am off out today to order solvent based base coat colors for a couple of cars that need a partial re-paint. I do not want to end up with two tone paint jobs after a couple of years and then have to re-shoot the whole car.

You haff three dayss until Obergruppenfuehrer Ahhhnold's EnviroNazis amputate your solvent base coat!

Ignore those wonderful pictures of beautiful down town Pasadena on New Years day when it is sunny and 60 deg. That snow out side is worth not having to deal with problems we have here in California. Who else drove there roadsters yesterday?

    Stay away. California sucks.

The big 3 (OK that's a stretch) apparently have been using water based paints for at least 10 years.

From what I hear, and I don't paint but you may need a new water fall booth to paint if you have to conform to epa standards in California unless the big one hits and California floats off into the Pacific in which case you'll be closer to the Philippines and they don't got no stinking laws on pollution. Just don't get hit by a Continent Sized Iceberg on the way. Global warming hit hard this year and there's no ice left south of New Zealand.

So Cal is one of the first to go low VOC..California is split up into different districts so there are areas that will not fall into change for some time...PPGs water works well and so does Sikkens..We are bringing in a solvent based base coat from Australia that is still compliant to serve the walkin guys that don't want the hassle of water..We do sell quite a bit of Auto Air ,there are some that want water so they can spray in their garage although you still have to clear the deal so I don't see the gain...Overall the whole thing is a pain in the ass!!%$#@

Just got back from the paint store - they are already out of all solvent based colors except, as they inform me, BASF have a low VOC solvent based paint that is EPA compliant. Whew, didn't have to spend a fortune stocking up after all.:)

And for all you California bashers - it's sunny, 70*F and time to go for a ride in the hot rod.

You will still be able to buy it online and you don't have to pay taxes on it(until Obama gets his way)

  15. I didn't know Obama was in the paint biz. Relax guys, water borne is different, just like base coat clear coat was different when we changed to that. Change is good, so are the water born base coats.

water based base coats are'nt that bad. many of the body shops around here (the dealership ones anyways) have recently switched. a good buddy paints for one of them and has no complaints.
i also happen to work in the paint shop at a GM plant and have'nt seen any problems with water based base coats on that end either.
the clear is what will offer the UV protection. basecoat by itself has none.

don't worry so much. it won't be that bad.

  17. while everyone is sobbing and lamenting and crying the blues...
i'll be in the garage shooting water paint like i have been for the last few years...

go buy a 1.2 and learn something new.
the hardest part is learning to not complain.

Jeez!!! Slow down folks. I am retired, but I work for a automotive paint supplier in Sacramento to stay occupied.( great way to see all the rod shops and find out what is shaking too:D) Anyway, water based paint has been used in Europe , read that Ferrari & Rolls Royce since the 70's, so do you think it is any good? Just my .02:) Also, California is a total shit hole, I'd stay away if I were you!

I heard the same arguments when they threatened to stop selling leaded gas...still waiting for the sky to fall (and the flashbacks they promised). BTW - I haven't heard anything about pulling solvent-based paints from any of the shops here in San Diego. For what I am paying for reducer I kinda like the idea of thinning with water!

Color match with water is not a problem....Body shops mix colors every day using water based paints to repair that quarter panel on a crashed Honda Civic.

Even if you have the paint code off the door you dont paint a car based on the code, there can be 4 variations of that single paint code.

The only concern that may be valid is the additional expense to get your booth up to date to spray water base.....you need more air movement.

My main concern is that water based may fade at a different rate to solvent based. Even the main man and custom color mixer at the high end automotive paint store said that he cannot answer that one and that it may take a few years before there are answers.

If you have a vehicle painted with a solvent based paint but need to re-shoot one or two panels because some numbnutz in the WallyMart parking lot decides to customize your body panels with a shopping cart, and assuming you get a perfect match with waterborne color coat, how will it look after five or ten years? Will the color fade consistently between the two types of base coat or will you end up with a free but unwanted two tone? This is why I decided to stock up on solvent base coat - to use with existing solvent based paint jobs and minimize any potential risk of unequal fading.

This is not Chicken Little syndrome:D but merely a precaution. I have no problem with painting a whole car with waterborne base coat. I am just not happy to be the lab rat for hybrid paint jobs.

I think anything that can be done to make the paint less poisonous the better. I have been around painters most of my life, and it is really sad seeing old painters look and be poisoned by their work environment, and the health issues they and their families end up dealing with. It is really ridiculous that this has been happening for so long, but it is a free country and you can choose not to paint. Not bashing the original poster / question, But, who cares of the car fades a little earlier. It just doesn't seem right for all these painters being poisoned so bad. I can pick an old painter out of a crowd by their brittle looking hair and poisoned looking skin.
Okay, I used to spray Imron on Freightliner tow trucks ( that is a lot of surface area ) with just a wet down home depot dust mask in an enclosed area when I was a teenager, but I am not a teenager anymore a know a little better. But maybe not much better posting on a forum.

I am not arguing Big Brother or not, just pointing out that the profession of automotive painter is a dangerous one that takes many years off life and quality of life of the painter.

+1 The average painter spends 10 years in the field before health issues force them out.

I lived in Ventura in the '80s and from time to time I have missed its weather and landscape...but stories like this help remind me why I moved back to Texas.:D

Houston might be a hell hole (weather-wise at least) but at least most of our "nuts" are in a can and not the political office!
