Oppose Federal “Cash for Clunkers” Program
Washington lawmakers are drafting a large economic stimulus package to help create jobs and rebuild infrastructure. They want to include a nationwide scrappage program which would give U.S. tax dollars to consumers who turn-in older cars to have them crushed, as a misguided attempt to spur new car sales. The lawmakers need to scrap this idea.
The stimulus package is being drafted right now. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wants to introduce the bill on January 6 and have it approved by Congress by January 20, so that President Obama can sign it into law after he is inaugurated.

Contact House Speaker Nancy Pelosi IMMEDIATELY To Oppose Cash for Clunkers!

    Talking Points
Oppose the Use of U.S. Taxpayer Dollars for Cash for Clunkers
    • I am [calling/writing] to urge lawmakers not to include a “Cash for Clunkers” provision in the economic stimulus bill. Owners who turn in vehicles for crushing would receive a "minimal" payment to purchase a new car. This is a misguided attempt to spur car sales and claim that the country’s air quality or fleet fuel mileage is being improved.

    • “Cash for Clunkers” programs threaten enthusiasts nationwide with the loss of valuable parts and parts-cars for repair, restoration, and customization projects. The programs also risk destroying classic, historic and special-interest vehicles, our American heritage.

    • Cars turned in for scrappage often barely run, or are rarely-driven second or third vehicles that have a minimal impact on overall fuel economy or emissions.

    • “Cash for Clunkers” programs will reduce the availability of affordable transportation and repair parts used by low-income drivers. It will also compete with the Salvation Army, the Purple Heart and other charities that rely on vehicle donations to raise money.

    • “Cash for Clunkers” ignores better policy options. If Congress wants to act, support for repair and upgrade is a better choice and a win-win for consumers, dealers, manufacturers and repair shops. Significant emissions and fuel economy improvements can be achieved in older vehicles through relatively simple and inexpensive means: repaired/replaced exhaust systems, tune-ups, etc.
    • We hope we can count on you to reject “Cash for Clunkers.” Thank you for your consideration on this very important matter.

Also remind them how this would affect the core charges of remanufactured drive line parts , that would even more hurt thoose out of work or underemployed.

All aimed at "safety and the environment" If people thought they might die in the older and less safe car, maybe they would drive better. Or is this a BIG THREE stimulus. Already happened in texas.

the sad thing about the environment is that they don't give up there cars . they drive to work ,go shoping, go out to eat and what ever we do . If they want to be true environment crush your own car, don't use electric or gas to heat there home . then I would (not ) listen to them...

I've had to send letters for similar legislation here in New Mexico a few years ago, so I'm sad to see federal legislators trying the same thing. I just sent my letter and forwarded it to friends.

  23. Folks, you've got to send these kinds of messages to YOUR Congressional representative AND Senators. Just sending it to Speaker Pelosi doesn't cut it because if you aren't from her district it'll probably get ignored. Send it to your Representative and Senators AND cc Pelosi along with Sen. Henry Reid (he tried pushing the scrappage thing back in the Senate in the '90s and SEMA fought him then, too!).

HINT: sending a handwritten letter/fax, according to legislative activists, will get a LOT more attention than a boiler-plate e-mail. That was how they got the attention of Reid & Co. back in the '90s...

And, no matter how much you want to tongue-lash your Congressman or protest their political/philosophical leanings, be CIVIL, restrain yourself and give'em the facts, not a regurgitation of the "left-leaning liberal" or Floyd P. Turbo-Amerikun/Emil Pitts "Pitts Off"'s "gun-toting/God-loving" vitriol...or you may see a plain-looking van with dark-tinted glass parked in your neighborhood (sorry, couldn't resist).

When I heard of this bill through the metalshapers’ forum, who also have an interest in fighting this, I thought of a line from the movie Tucker, where he’s headed into court and his lawyer says to him, “Preston , be careful, you have no idea what you’re up against, how powerful these people are.” Then when I just opened the Jalopy Journal page, what’s there but a Tucker!
I agree with Yutan Flash above, in regards to a letter on good old paper (traditional?) It would speak louder to me if I was a politician, and letterheads would indicate that there is a considerable business sector out there, with large and small businesses that rely on this secondary use stream of old car parts.

Can someone post the actual proposed legislation. Just not enough info to make a sound decision. I don't see where the auto wreckers are told to crush, just where the owner sells them to the gov't. who will in turn give or sub out to an auto dismantler.

    GREEN?!?!?

WTH is driving the same car for 40 years not green?
its the ultimate recycle. much less global "footprint" than building a new car. hybrids may help the smog in cali, but the chinese more than make up for it. I guess its ok if all the pollution stays on their side of the globe:rolleyes:
sometimes I feel like green is the new red. its all about CONTROL.

lawmakers neglect to tell everyone how much pollution from battery byproducts and shipping raw materials back and forth these new cars make. all they give a crap about is making plenty of tax money off yuppies buying new cars every 2 years. makes me wanna puke.
it will probably just become very expensive to keep an old car.
all they really want is your money. they already have the control.

the bottom line is if you dont fight the idiots in washington they will bowl over you. everyone MUST send in any of these types of petitions you see.
    well said it bears repeating.
