It's the little s*** that always gets me.
Any ideas where a guy might find odd sized bolts (without paying $9 shipping for a single bolt like at boltdepot.com). Looking for a 1/4"-20x5" with an allen head - that's the part that's making this difficult. -A standard bolt won't fit within the ribs.

-Need to secure my dual-quad Moon air cleaner ***embly, now that I added a taller filter.
    -Thanks

Do you guys in California not have a nut and bolt store or a Ace hardware?

That should be a common item.

Even in this small town we have 3 or 4 to chose from. HRP

Try ACE hardware if you dont want to go to Fastenal, or try www.mcmaster.com vs boltdepot

You could use a piece of all thread, a small spacer and nut, but that may be too simple. Next find a machine shop and have them make you one out of stainless steel with a custom head, should only set you back $2-300,00

Call first. The last time I walked into a fastenal store looking for an odd fastener they freaked about it being a non-commercial sale. And only sold the item after I whipped out a business card from a manufacturing company and insisted they'd sent me.

Also look at the "nutsert" style things they sell at home improvement stores. The kind where you drill a hole in wood, then tap these in. One side is threads, one side is a decorative ****on. Point being, with many of those styles if you remove the anchor barbs, what remains is a closed head decorative nut, perfect for attaching an air cleaner lid.

    good luck

Wow, I've never had any trouble buying stuff at Fastenal. Wearing my uniform shirt into the place might help though.........I dunno.

Similar to what Randaddy said, my solution was to use what hardware stores call a "coupler". It's like a tall nut, threaded all the way through, that allows you to screw whatever length of bolt you need in each end, after cutting one head off. Or you could use all-thread for the end that screws into the carb.

I needed an air cleaner hold down bolt in a pinch several years ago--and it's still doing the job!

Fastenal should NOT do that to you! I work for them and I never turn away anybody be it wholesale or retail. We don't have any rules against retail sales.

Everyone that builds anything at all should know about www.mcmaster.com, I build all kinds of industrial equipment and Mcmaster-Carr has all of the hard to get little parts and the big ones. If you live with in a few hundred miles of one of there shops the shipping is only 1 day.

Watch the bolts/nuts you buy there...they are made in China...the cheap ones will twist when you put any kind of torque on them...then break. If you're looking for bolts that will hold, go for the graded bolts.
