It's kinda funny, you can tell alot of people have no idea what goes into putting on or working a show. If you think somebody is getting rich off your car, step up and become a millionaire. It's easy and there's no risk involved. Plus, you won't hear a single *** clown ***** about a thing!

I'm not arguing the point that is costs a boatload to put on a show, I guess mostly I stopped doing them because they stopped being fun and turned into ego-fests. Just turned out to be far too many huge money cars that people just bought and they stood there taking bows for nothing more than their ability to write a check. I have more respect for the guy with a so-so Chevy that he did everything himself to, than the clown with the concours '59 Eldorado who doesn't even know how to gap the points. BTW, I really love (read that VERY sarcastically) when you watch the Barrett-Jackson auction and they're all there blabbering about how they're "car guys just like you and me" and they're into it because of their love of cars and not the money (yeah, right)

If you don't want to pay, don't.........just stay home. I work on a committee that puts on a show once a year. It's a charity show. None of us get paid. You would be amazed at the expenses to put on a show. Insurance, rent, permits, port-a-pots, trophies, t-shirts, etc, etc, etc. Put on your own free show sometime and see how easy that is. And cheap.........in fact, let's make a law that it's illegal to charge an entry fee to the participants. Then we can ***** about there not being any shows anymore.

We put on a free car show in conjunction with the local Rotary club. We got a local business to let us use his lot, which attracted business to his restuarants. Our car club handled parking and the actual show. The Rotarians put up booths to sell food and donated their time. They also sold t-shirts then took all their proceeds and put it back into the community. Joint effort with civic clubs work well. Everybody wins and the show was great.

What makes you think they are making money on the car show and not just covering their expenses? Not implying anything with the question just wondering.

It is frustrating when you have anywhere between $10,000 and ??? and the organizer has his or her hand out for $10.00 or $20.00 to register
Plus the price of gas to get there and back plus food and the time cleaning
You might get a wash mitt , a spray bottle of tire cleaner or a can of polish as a door prize.
    Ye haw
If the proceeds go to a worthy cause such as the Childrens Make a Wish Foundation etc etc , then I'll be there and pay whatever they ask
I go to more Cruise Nights than I do Carshows
If they could find a way to get John Q Public to pay $2.00 a person I think it would help the feelings of many car owners so that they don't feel that they are the only ones shelling out money
I'm sure many Shriners , Rotary Club members etc etc give of their time and have out of pocket expenses as well
We are fortunate to own cl***ic vehicles and to be in the position to bring happiness to others and hopefully ***ist in raising some money for a worthy cause

To answer your question: if you're gonna *****, stay home.

  12. It is unbelievable what it costs to put on an event such as Good Guys, NSRA, GNRS or any other big event. I used to be a rep for GG and was in on the deal when they first set up their show at Kansas Speedway. To say that it shocked me when I heard the dollar figures being tossed around to rent that place would be an understatement. Every building, every additional parking space, every additional fenced in area was an additional fee and beleive me they were not rented for peanuts.
I have been to a lot of their shows and what you get for the dollars that you pay as far as I can see is a very fair value.
One thing you do need to remember is there is no one forcing you to go in the gate, it is a choice that you make. If you feel that you are being overcharged for what you are, getting don't go.
I try to enjoy all aspects of every show.
    Later,

Why else would non-car people invest time and money into a project without any other benfits?

You choose to spend the money on your car and you choose to show it. Although you say it to provide happiness to others I highly doubt that is the case. You enjoy people looking at your car and hopefully making nice comments about it and meeting with other like minded people just like everyone else.

Putting on a car show is work not even including the expenses invloved. They put together an event so like minded people can get together and enjoy each other and their cars. If they make a little extra on the side good for them. It's not you who is spending your time and putting up with the headaches of getting it organized etc but it is you that is enjoying it. Do you not walk around a look at other cars talk to people? You are just as much a spectator as anyone else in the even you just have a better parking spot.

How do you know they are not car people?

There are a lot of ways to make money and if you don't like cars I doubt you would go through the headaches of putting on a car show.

  17. NON CAR PEOPLE??? wtf,Ive shown for over 30 years and every show Ive ever done had car guys of one style or another running it,They just have the coin to follow the dream, and maybe just maybe they feel they are giving back to other car guys and gals..........like I said if you want people to pay you,,,,,,,it better be a atomicpunk or have one helluva history to make that happen.........and just to show ya heres some of my SHOW signs from the last 30 years

Here's a question: WHY do you pay your money to subscribe to a mag...?? Most times it's full of "high-dollar cars." And it's certainly full of advertisers...and they are in the business of making a profit...and so is the magazine!!! What's the difference...???

Isn't the Internet good enuff for all your car hunger...and isn't it free...??? NOT...

Guess what... there ain't much that's FREE anymore...

Never "got" the whole show thing. But I still pay to enter my car in the drags - because I dig getting ET slips with solid info about how my tune-up works, plus I can't get any traction on the street.

Actually thinking you should build a car "to show it" ???

That is the beginning of the "out of touch" thought.

Its a car.. a traditional hot rod should be driven.. not "showed". That's the freaking point.

Car shows are hard.. they are expensive.. and ones like goodguys.. they are a business... so profits make a difference.

Small shows.. usually no fee's... charity shows like the Blacktop Barons Roadblock.. or the Pileup.. there is a fee.. usually around $20.

Corporate shows.. the sky is the limit.

Have i mentioned lately that i don't like car people? :)

This year not only did I have to pay as a spectator for a certain event I went to but all the cars there had to pay too. It was a boiling hot day with hundreds of people and only one food vendor and you had to stand in line for an hour just to pay for some water. The bands did not start when the said they would and they were charging over 25 bucks for a T shirt. I won’t be going to that show again
We did take the wife’s Studebaker to a car show at the Shanty Tavern in Seattle this summer, free bands free entry and we were invited back to a local car clubs barbeque with free beer & food had a great time zero bucks.

  26. Another part of the subject show is the fact they charge the public to attend as well as the car owners. I guess it's like going to the dirt track, the pit money and spectator money help pay the racers.
Last year they invited some "high end" cars to this show. Did the promoter pay for those to attend? But if they weren't invited, in this area you can pretty well name who is going to have what cars there and what Corvette and other clubs will be in attendance.
I think it would be neat if we had an influx of hotrods to break up the normal show routine around here.

Funny you should say that Keith, we used to have a dog AND car show here in Winter park, it was a blast. They closed off a ritzy street in Winter Park and people just went from house to house, greeting owners and their dogs, drinking wine and eating cheese. Tons of fun, all the proceeds went to the ASPCA. Wish they still had it.
