Who has a '49 - '52 Chevy car with a Camaro clip?

I have a '50 Chevy running a second gen ('70?) Camaro clip. I have 15x4 wheels and some sort of racing tire in the front. The tire seems to rub some.

I am looking to get different wheels and tires on all 4 corners. My question is what size wheel and tires are other running on this style car with a Camaro clip. If you know the backspacing that would be nice as well. If you have a picture post it up if you get the chance. Thanks

 

I found that clip to be too wide for my '51. I went with a 74 Nova clip. It is narrower. You need wheels with different backspacing. I also set mine up centered in the wheelwells, not forward as the stock centerline was. It looks better and gave a little more turning clearance. Sorry the pics don't show more. I haven't loaded the other pics in the 'puter yet. I was able to use stock 15x6 rally wheels. As I said, you need to determine what backspacing will work for you.

 

if it was mine i would build a new frame with a must11.but in your case i notice the really late models the kind that have about 20 round holes in the wheel have a ton of offset.

 

I was in the same boat a year ago. Had a camaro clip on mine. Wrestled with it for about a year. Trying different wheels, offsets, trying to line up original sheet metal, radiator support...looked into narrowed control arms ($1,000)....the frame horns end up right behind the grill, couldnt even get a finger in between the fenderwell and tire....nightmare!! Yeah, there are people running them and are happy with them, but for the money I thought I was going to save and the months and months of frustration, wasnt worth it. I bought another frame from a HAMBer and hacked off the camaro clip, grafted on the original front end (because my rear was already notched and bagged) bought a Mustang II, was installed in a few hours, all my sheet metal bumpers,etc bolted right up. These clips are just too wide. Just my experience, hope this helps, good luck....

 

I had a 50 chevy with a firebird clip. when I got it, it had steel wheels and bigtime clearance issues. I didn't want to make any radical changes, so I ran late 90's S-10 factory mags and 50 series tires. no problems with clearance and my bumper sat about 3-4 inches from the pavement.

 

I don't know what kind of a "look" you are going for, but here is what mine looked like.

 

I'd rather rebuild the whole car than run those ugly wheels. Or order the same offset in steelies.

 

I've got on in my 46-8 Chevy coupe. I ordered a set of custom steelies form Wheel Vintiques to help the issue. They are 15 x 5 or 6, with 1 1/2 in. backspacing ( EDIT...NOOOOOOOO...I meant front spacing! moves most of the tire toward the inside). Or maybe 1 3/4....it's been a long time since I got them. They fit "OK" but will still rub if the car sits very low, but I've got airbags on it to raise it a couple inches. Narrowed A frames will help, as well as running metric rotors every little bit helps, and they all add up to being driveable, in a no-so-perfect situation.
You still won't be able to run it VERY low without something to lift it while driving. But in a normal traditional 50's type stance, you should be OK.

 

The rubbing I am getting is not bad but it still does it. I do not like the wheels and the front tires are junk so I need to switch them anyways. I was wanting to try and not do the narrowed arms due to the cost. A previous owner pulled out the inner fenders so that is not an issue.

 

I don't have a 49 - 52, but a 54 with a 79 Camaro clip. It was too wide for the ride height I was running. I use stock rims with 1" narrowed control arms and it works for me.
