Hello all, my name is Cesare. I'm 19 and from Akron, Ohio. I recently sold my s10 and purchased a 1959 Edsel Ranger Sedan. I am new to Ford and also to older cars. All the google searching I do seems to point me to this forum, so I figured I'd sign up. Maybe some of you can help me pin down some details as I plan and go through the build.

    The s10

    The Edsel

Picked it up for $2300. Straight six, 3 speed manual, 100% Complete, Solid Floor boards and body, Clear ***le. It runs, but I have to keep the key turned to the start position, keeping the starter engaged. Bad ignition maybe?

I want to be able to use this car as a tow pig/daily driver. Immediate plans are to drop in a fuel injected 302 and posi rear end. 20/22 combo, Smoothies. Eventual Plans will be to build an entire frame on air ride. I do not plan on slamming it in the ground like the s10, I want to keep the entire thing an inch off the ground at 0 psi. Then after that is all done, paint and interior. I will keep the interior stock, except covered in white leather instead of cloth. The exterior will be kept completely stock, no shaving. I haven't decided on whether I want to change the color or not yet.

Welcome to the HAMB from South Texas ! While you are looking around here,... go to 'search' and type 'coupe' in the box, see what you get. There are some great builds!! 20/22 combo's aren't used here very much. Good Luck!

Welcome from Denton, Texas. I always wanted an Edsel, love those cars. I can't say I would like it with the big wheels....but we all have our own opinions.

Welcome to the hamb. That will be a cool project. Your plan sounds pretty cool though the big hoops aren't excactly traditional.
As for your starting problem, sounds like it could be a bad resistor or ignition switch. With a points distributor the power for the coil goes through a resistor to reduce the voltage to avoid burning up the points. When you turn the key to start, it sends power from the solenoid straight to the coil so it byp***es the resistor. To check it, turn the key on and check for voltage on both sides of the resistor. If you have voltage in but not out then replace the resistor. If there is no voltage then it's the wiring or possibly a bad switch. The other thing is to check your fuses before you tear into it, some times it's the simple things.
I have never worked on an Edsel but this should work on most point ignition systems.
    Good luck.

Thanks for the comments, and Green T, definantly thank you for that info, I will definantly be using that.

OneLow34, I live 5 minutes from Canton, graduated from Springfield, Going to Akron University now. Why did you decide to move?

With the overall look of the project, I am going for something low and clean like this:

  11. welcome to the hamb, cool car you got there. Like the idea of bags would look great on the deck. have you thought about some more traditional wheels? maybe some 15x6 or 15x7 reverse chromies with white walls, they would look killer! just some food for thought, good luck with the edsel

you can either slam it or keep the interior stock... not both.

you have 4 inches before the pinion hits the bump stop. to get it an inch off the ground will take major floor board modification. and bucket rear seats...

i looked into bags for mine, I decided that 4 inches wasn't worth the cost or modification necessary to 4 link and bag.

this isn't my car but its what an edsel looks like with a 4 inch drop, and no suspension... pretty damn good in my opinion if you can tolerate the ride.

oh and for your problem keeping it running. what blown green t said is probably right. I'd try running a jumper wire from the +battery post to the +terminal on the coil. it should stay running this way. you could probably even take it around the block, then to shut it off disconnect the wire. if that works i would check the resistor then the ignition switch for voltage as blown green t mentioned.

  18. Welcome to the camp. Edsels were so cool. My Greatgrand mother had a new '58. It had the push ****on ****** selector in the in the steering wheel hub. She would let me push the ****ons to make it "go" I was probably 4 or 5. i thought that was the coolest thing on the planet.
I think you have a real gem there. If you can capture that long and low look like the Caddy that would be so *****in, Keep the pink too.
    Good luck.

There you go Cesare! Another FORD convert! S-10 to Edsel go figure. I really like the trim line on that one it's a cool car man! I am sure you can find some help here if you ever need to upgrade that six to an eight....

    Welcome from another new hamb'er

Thanks for all the compliments and information everyone.

I am still trying to sell the dime, and I also have some other projects going through my garage at the moment, so I won't be working on it for another couple months.

This car will be on the deck with a bench seat in the rear. I will figure it out. If I have to have a custom driveshaft with a carrier bearing made, I will. I am a good fabricator so I'm not worried about actually doing the work.

Here are two of my current projects I am working on for other people.

So, I replaced the battery, starter solenoid and the ignition. It still won't stay running. If I keep the starter engaged it stays running, but as soon as I let off the key it shuts off. What else could it be?

Someone said earlier about a resistor, did they mean the solenoid?
