Pointing exhaust at your tires?

That makes sense. How about exhaust fumes in the car?

  2. I have a minimal amount of soot on the rear wheels, but it is loud when you push the music pedal.

The end of the exhaust is pretty much past the windows so there aren't many fumes...

Probably get more fumes from burnt up header gaskets :)

Here in So Cal back in the 60's-80's it seemed like every Hot Rod, Muscle car, Street Machine, Mini Truck etc. had the tail pipes coming out on an angle in front of the rear tires. Other than dirty wheels I never saw or heard of a problem. And remember side pipes? same deal.
NASCAR still exits in front of the right rear tire. Trans Am series cars and SCCA Sedan all ran them that way too.
I really don't think it's a problem on a street car by any means

I'm not worried about the heat either.

And sometimes dumping the exhaust in front of the rear tire is the only good place for it.
But if I do, I try to point it away from the tire...

I hear you. And I think you know I'm not advocating fenders, radials, etc. Just as I'm sure you're not advocating building your car as some clapped out tossed together turd, which I would consider the opposite end of the same spectrum.

Just tossing the question out there. And the funny thing is the Deuce 5W in this thread is what really had me thinking about it. And I hadn't ever considered metalshapes' answer which make the most sense of all.

  9. Alex has a valid point but really.........with a small car like we are talking about, if you blow an engine, lose a head gasket, grenade a ******.............there is going to be enough flotsam spewing out from under and around the car that where it came from will be the least of your worries.Pipes pointed at the tires, even outwards like Alex showed pics of are common and not a concern. Sorry Alex.

Everything else being equal, I would rather run the exhaust
out the back, especially on a race car.

NASCAR exhaust dumps out the side of the car, not straight at the tire.

Not a good idea with wide whites unless you've got stock in bleach white.

  13. I had the exhaust running out in front of the rear tires on my 51 plymouth.Ran it like that for about 15 years ,at least 65000 mi . The only negative I saw was back tires were harder to clean.

I have a 97 Ford 150 pick-up mentioned in some replies. Never even thought about the exhaust pipe at the rear p***enger side tire. Never noticed anything because of it and I bought it new and now have nearly a quarter million miles on it. Still a lot of variables to consider. How direst? How big? What kind of power pumping out the pipes? What kind of driving? Never heard anything directly about ill effects of doing it. Think it out, then straighten it out. GOOD LUCK...............

Kevin, I'm positive we both understand where we're coming from, and I actually do think it is a more than valid question.

I've thought about it with my roadster build since I have plans for my exhaust to exit in front of the rear tires. In fact, I'm thinking that I may make the two belled tips that exit out each side some sort of plugged cut-out, so that I can cap them up and run exhaust out the rear when I want the car to be a little less obnoxiously loud. That would also relieve the need to constantly clean the rear whitewalls.

However, I think that those two things I just touched-on are the only real issues you would face on a hot rod...tire up-keep (whitewalls especially) and excessive noise. I really don't think that heat build-up as related to the rear tires would make all that much difference in the real world.

I guess all I was really trying to point out with my original post is that most rational thinking can often be thrown out the window when you start building an open-wheeled, hoodless, (etc.) HOT ROD. :)

I have never given it any thought, or concern on a hotrod. My exhaust does exit just in front of the tire, mostly because it looked like a logical place to terminate it and because that is what I had seen in the old pics. I have driven a few miles and only have to deal with the smell and the noise. the only tire breakdown I have is the front tires, maybe related?

Absolutely. I had both pipes running out of the p***enger side right in front of the rear tire on my last car. Not pointed at the tire but it still kind of bothered me.

I'm going to have a tough time making a good looking exhaust on my coupe. There's really no place to hide it and I want it mostly hidden.

The noise coming out of those open pipes on either side of me is one of the best sounds I can think of. I don't mind annoying other people....

I'd prefer not to think of my car as "some clapped out tossed together turd."

The pipes aren't as close to the tires as they appear to be in the photo, but everyone is en***led to thier own opinions. I'm also not really too worried about dirty tires.

That's a rule. If they exit out the rear, a drafting car will overheat quickly.

Zombie Hot Rod,I think you read that wrong.I don't think that part was a reference to your car

  25. Do you have room to get the pipes up and over the rear axle and out to the back of the body?

If so, why not tuck the pipe up close to the trunk floor - with reasonable clearance so you're not heating the floor - turn them at an angle running the pipes toward body outside corner (like a station wagon) and put turn-down tips at the ends?

Did that once, sleeper Shoebox with Rocket Motor and the tuck-the-pipe-in-turn-down bit was done on the left tailpipe and a straight tip on the right was in plain view like a stocker.
6.70-15 WWs all around, Shoebox hubcaps, Hurst shifter tucked next to the drivers knee where a judiciously placed jacket hid it when parked and tach under the dash.
    Fun, fun car.

If you're talking about simply getting the exhaust up under the car and hidden by the frame you can get pretty close to the floor and keep heat away by installing a sheet metal heat shield on short (tubing?) stands between collectors and exhaust pipes.
Place the mufflers far back as you can in front of the rear axle, there's usually room there for muffs.
The budget way out with U-bends and a hacksaw will do it.

It's a given that most times the primaries and collectors will be visible and that's ok, but when the muffs and tailpipes hang down in view . . . not so good....

Straight in with the pics on my first post.

I had a 1969 Vauxhall Cresta with trumpets firing at the rears, never really had any ill effects from it.

Having said that the Pos-a-tractions were hard *** tires.

    Oh and hello everyone ;)

  27. Really like your color combo, neat little car.

I've thought of doing the exhaust on my 31 on 32 rails car similarly and in fact already have the headers for it.

    Headers mocked up.
My thinking on the pipe is similar to yours, but extend it about 10" past the rear axle.

I'm guessing extending your pipe just past the axle would take care of getting the car dirtied up from the exhaust and get the end out of a really turbulent area aerodynamically speaking.

Zombie, is your exhaust pipe flared at the end? Or is it just an illusion of part of pipe under the frame. I really like the idea of having a larger opening on the end of the pipe, looks really good.
