Magnetic fields, dumb questions.

  1. Art Bell was just going on about how the lack of sunspots could lead to a reversal of earth's magnetic poles... which got me to thinking, if that happened it would mess up anything with a permanent magnet electric motor. Not that they'd stop, wouldn't they run, but backwards?

Assuming I'm right on that, could I make my starter on the car rotate the same way as before, by taking it apart and switching the magnets in the case? If it runs backwards, it's probably not going to start very well.

I did that once for a model train - put the better drive from a Chinese made engine into a US-made engine that was a swap because the Chinese just basically copied the US one - and found they'd switched the electrical contact so it ran backwards.. no way to correct that and still use all the better parts... so I pulled the motor apart and swapped the magnets. It then ran the same as all the other engines.

Just a guess, but a generator would have to have either the same swap or the rotation reversed to charge... or could I just change the field on it? And an alternator wouldn't matter?

Or maybe I should just be lazy and switch the terminals on the car battery and see what happens. Most of that stuff doesn't care which way ground is, except maybe would have to swap the leads on the coil.

Yeah, it's probably a dumb thought at 2:30 AM, but what the heck. It's been too long since I studied this basic stuff in school.

Most starter motors are not permanent magnet motors but have electrically charged fields; can't recall the proper term for that but what it amounts to is that they turn the same direction with either battery polarity. So yes, if you take it apart and re wire the fields it would run the opposite direction, but as the magnets are not permanent type I don't think re orienting them would matter.
Generators I believe are the same situation.
The newer gear drive mini starters I think are permanent magnet motors.

The EARTH's magnetic poles. Not every other magnetic pole. Compasses would be affected, motors not.

  5. The earths magnetic field should have no bearing on an electric motor. They are generating there own field so it would remain a constant. They would not reverse.

a lot of late model starters ARE PM anymore, they're trying to get the weight down....

btw, don't beat on these with a hammer, the magnets break;)

btw, exactly what do you think we can DO about sunspots or the lack of them?
    doom and gloom....

  8. I think if the Earth's magnetic poles shift, the LEAST of your worries will be if your fuckin' starter motor works!!-MIKE:eek::rolleyes:

If the worlds magnetic poles were reversed, if you dropped a wrench, wouldn't it fall up?

I used to listen to Art Bell when I worked nights. I remember when a guy sent him a prototype time machine for Art to test. The guy wanted to sell them for $350, and was hoping for Art's endorsement. I wanted to get one, go back to 1938 or so and start buying '32 thru '34 three windows, stash them in a barn belonging to my (at the time) 22 year old grandfather, then travel back to present time and start building! Of course all this became pointless when Brookville made their own time machine and started building new bodies. Now I need a cash machine to pay for one...

No that's gravity! But I have heard it said "there is no such thing as gravity, the earth sucks..."

Why is when you have a magnetic personality people gravitate toward you?

    UHH, can people gravitateawayfrom you?

Yup, that is a dumb question, or is it. Won't have any effects on cars but what about people. Have you noticed people are getting dumber instead of smarter? Magnetic pole reversal was first mentioned approx 20 yrs ago as part of a cycle. Over those years look at how backward we've become.

With front wheel drive we are now driving backwards. Guys are turning into girls and girls are turning into guys. The US went to bed with the Bush family and Canada snuggled up between Mulroney and Chretien.

Space age technology made life more complicated when it was predicted to make things easier. We've become slaves to the computer age. The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. There's all kinds of weird metallic things growing outta the new generations skin. Everbody's got a cell phone glued to their face and babble about nothing.

Seems far fetched to think a pole reversal could do this, but look what was accomplished before these times. We invented trains, planes, automobiles and learned to shit indoors with modern plumbing. Elvis died and was replaced with Micheal Jackson. Ouch!

Our intestines has reversed, we shit more from our mouths than from the other end. That reminds me, I have something else to do. Anyway, for every dumb question there is a dumb answer. Dumb enough for ya? Or is it.....

Remember, as a example, the space program vehicles use hydrazine powered rotary APU's in space, where there is considerably less polar magnetism in the user environment - space vehicles loaded with motors of all types - NOW - since the ionosphere and magnetosphere is magnetic, what effect there? Would it float away, disperse, or drop to Earth? How could this not have occured to Art Bell, since those two items of geophysics directly impact the signal propogation of radio!

My wife used to have the refridgerator plastered with all kinds of decorative magnets. Course they were always getting knocked off or falling off. When the fridge went out, and we had to buy a new one, I told her the magnetic flux of the magnets was messing up the electronics of the fridge. Now, we have a nice and clean, uncluttered fridge. Just don't tell her the truth! Butch/56sedandelivery.

I think the really amazing thing is that this thread has been up for 18 hours or so, and is still here.

Could the sunspots be affecting the mods ability to delete it, when in fact they are actually promoting it?

Hmmnnn...begs a question to be pondered.

Rod Serling creeps me the hell out.....

...and as far as sunspots and magnetic shifting poles, uh, it looks to me as if you may have started your New Years drinking a LITTLE early this year, just saying is all...:D

Consider an anomanal variation.Say a small percentage of individuals are grounded opposite the norm.Where most of us are negativly grounded,in our world a few of us are positivly grounded. Those grounded opposite may be prone to spontanious combustion.Waiting for the short that blows them to dust in an instant. If the polls were to reverse would the greater percentage then be prown to spontaniously combust, possibly sending most of us to a pile of dust.Just something to think about, Happy New Year..........
