I did a search and didnt find the answer ,so im asking.I found a Muncie M20 cheap and thought i would buy it as a backup .The only thing is one of the 4 mounting ears has been broke off and welded back on.Is this a problem? The weld looks good and the guy told me it was used for a year or two after the repair and held up fine.I know the bolts arent what centers the trans to the bellhousing ,the flange on the trans does.I have heard of them breaking the top left ear before ,but havent heard of them being repaired with success. What do you think?
Muncie's are 4 spd manuals out of 60's and 70's GM muscle cars. M20's are the small block versions with a 2.56 low and M21's are BigBlock 2.20 low .M22's are the ones called "Rock Crushers " and they were suppose to be the strongest one due to the straighter cut gears and 26 spline input shaft and turbo 400 type rear yoke. They are also the ones that make the whine that i think you are refering to .I have one in my 56 Chevy and it sounds like a gear drive. This is info off the top of my head ,so dont quote me on it ,cuz i will be corrected if im wrong ...
i think you answered your own question..... buy it and if you dont use it ill buy it from you.....lol...
Muncies are not at fault, rather installer useually broke the ears off trying to pull transmission in with the bolts for the last 3/8" when pilot bearing was not lined up properly with clutch. Those that knew muncies would bump the clutch with a pry bar. A lot of muncies are welded and are no problem.
I've broken several, welded them, and continued using in a race car. As long as the welding is strong, no problem ! I'll second the fact that it is fairly common. You can also break if you ground out the engine and trans on a curb.............
