I've got a 1942 Caddy flathead V8 and 3 speed transmission, and I'm trying to get the to the throwout bearing since it's been giving me some trouble recently. I can't get the transmission more than about 2 inches away from the bellhousing, and when I unbolt the clutch, I can see that the pilot bearing is stuck on the end of the input shaft and pressing against the friction disc. Any ideas on how to get my ****** out of there?

Its going to be a pain in the a$$,But it can be done.

Get yourself some all thread the same pitch size as the bellhousing bolts.
You will need about as many nuts as you have holes. Also will need that many washers too.

Get the nuts and washers in the gap,Then screw the all thread into the block.

Slowly start tightening all the nuts that they are all evenly pulling. It will take some time but you will eventually pull it off.

Dont get to crazy and tighten in one section only or you will break the bell housing.

    Hope this helps.

I've done what 35mastr suggested before - ripped the center out of my clutch disk because the pilot bearing was stuck on so tightly...when it let go, it LET GO! So be careful, but this is probably the best.

I tried the come along to no avail. Good suggestion, though. The allthread with nuts worked! It finally came out! Thanks for the suggestions!

If you can move the trans back a couple of inches, I would get a couple of piece of thick steel plate (maybe 1/2" or thicker, probably the thicker the better). Measure the distance between the trans front mounting holes and drill holes in the plates to match. Use these plates to reinforce the transmission front bolt tabs, so you don't break them. I would rather be a little safe that trying to either find another transmission case or someone to weld them back on.

Then use the suggestion that made before using all thread to press it out.

Be careful, you could get hurt.
