ok, maybe i have to much time on my hand. i have been thinking about going a different way with my truck. i still plan on running it fenderless. i am just thinking on doing something crazy with the drive line. i am thinking of making it all wheel drive. it will still be a street truck. i have been looking around at parts and doing alot of reading. i think i can make it work. i will have to make my own IFS front end. but thats not really problem. so what do you guys think? do you think its a waste of time, or worth a try? has anybody done anything like this? any info is good info...
not crazy --------- its cRaZy...... a guy around here had a 29 roadster. LOW & all wheel drive with 4 wheel steer. he fabricated the whole drive train & he made his own fuel injection. the car looked goooood! GO FOR IT!!
May not be as crazy as you think, heck a toronado drivline in a hotrod "backwards" thats crazy. Look around you may find some off the shelf stuff at your local wrecking yards, lots of cars with all wheel, Ford 500 for example, may make it easier than you think! Without innovation, we would all be in T bones.
This picture isn't HAMBy but I thought you might want to see it. It's the drivetrain out of one of the Roger Millen AWD Rx-7 rally or Pike's Peak cars. I think it's relevant to your idea because RX-7s and open-wheel hot rods both have engines set well back behind the front axle. So you might be able to use a similar layout as shown in this pic.
Of course you realize that even tho' the AWD hot rod is a workable idea, it doesn't follow that you're not crazy anyway??????? Haha. I mean, you're asking US if YOU are nuts?
Okay, so this is WAY outside the box. I like your idea and gotta know what you are throwing this at. Think of Euro-meets-American. Try ideas for the car derived from Bugatti, Ferrari, Duesenberg and ol' blue collar hero Ford. Edsel Ford that is. If Edsel would have had his way, Ford would have manufactured vehicles that had a European flair spun American style. His Speedsters, Zephyr, Duece, Mercury and the Continental are proof of that. So take that drivetrain and use it. But combine it with ideas and tech from the era that your car is from. Think Indy meets the beaches of Britain. Le Mans meets El Mirage. Good luck and I hope we see the results here-
thats nice! i am going to sell all of my stuff and go to work on it asap. i really liked the idea my self. i have a good sbc that i would like to use. i can sell my trans and rear end. i just need to find what i am going to use for the rest of the drive line. like i said, building control arms is nothing. its just finding every thing else. cheap... i have more time then money.
s-10 4x4 frame is all you probably need for AWD 48 international. Either do a viscous coupling in the front shaft or get a t-case from an AWD bravada, cyclone, typhoon, etc. I think the typhoon/cyclone type setup woule be sweet. There is an S-10 swap thread on here. Not sure how much different the 4x4 frames are. If the regular 4x4 track width is not wide enough get the ZR2 version that is 4" wider and try to lower it to where you want? Keep us in the loop.
i am building my own frame. so all i need is a drivetrain and spindles/hubs. i can make the rest of it work.
Audi have been doing the AWD thing for nearly 30 years, so used drivetrains might be easier to get by going with Audi. The Typhoon/Cyclone would be great if you want to use a SBC, but I'd think that would be more expensive just because they didnt make em a long time and they're fairly desireable. Only thing about the Audi system is I don't know if you'd have clearance for the front driveshaft with a SBC, but maybe. Then again you could really go nuts and use one of those old 5 cylinder engines >.<
Go get your self a AWD Chevy Astro van, 4.3 (same as the small block), 700R 4, and full time AWD with-out computer control issues. I drove one for 180,000 miles the AWD is tough and long lasting. Take the ****** and transter case, use the center section with your own axles and IFS. Would be alot of cheaper than the import stuff.......
They all have a engine management computer. But the ****** is eaisly cortrolled by a stand alone. My was a 1995. I was referring to the transfer case does not have a traction control that is computer controlled.
i think a fender-less 48 international is crazy. if you left the fenders on to hide the IFS it could be cool.
