Sorry right from the start that this isn't OLD car question.
I have to fix my Dad's old truck to sell. It is a 73' International 1/2 ton, last yr. they were made. Don't know the engine size but is big V8.
It has a blown valve cover gasket on the pass. side. I know all the stuff has to come off to get to it (Alt.,ac etc) the question is do I have to pull some of the dash to get to it.
Don't lauph, Dad was a mechanic & thought he might have to get to it on the backside thru the dash. He got the gasket but got too sick w/ cancer to tackle it.
Anybody KNOW about this. Don't know if being last yr. they were made makes it worth more but it's worth more running than not & have to sell it for my Mom. Thanks for any help. Uglymailman

There is a "flat" on the passenger side that will have the engine size stamped into it. It is towards the Alternator and just below the head. And no you don't need to remove the valve cover through the dash. Enough U-joint extensions and/or a box-end wrench will reach it. FWIW, IH pickups were made until 1975.

The flat will say either 304, 345, or 392.

The last few years IHC used Rambler engines.

    Fixed :D

I can confirm what Havi says. Just press on, you'll get it.

'75 was the last year for all of the light truck line: pick-up, Travelalls, etc. Scouts were made through 1980.

I had a 73 International pu years ago. It had a 400 AMC motor in it. It was a piece of shit of a truck and they never made a uglier truck than it.:eek::eek:
It only had front wheel brakes but that som bitch would start anytime you hit the push button added onto the dash and would pull like a mule.:D:D:D

I sold my '73 1210 4x4 this last Fall. Rust has a way with them, lol. But with that 345 and 4 speed, it plowed snow like no other.

  8. I would love to have a '48 KB with a 345 or 392. I just think they are the coolest trucks ever. I like a 54 - 56 pretty good too.

1975 was the last year of the Travelall and pickup production not 1973, the AMC V8 was a 1973-1974 deal and it was a AMC 401 that IH sold as a 400 the only AMC engine offered in 1975 was the 258 6 cylinder. You do not have to remove the AC unit from the firewall to replace the valve cover gasket, there is 3 bolts on the front of the head to remove the AC compresser/Alt bracket from the engine, just move that out as a unit and swapping the vlave cover is easy. All IH engines are BIG V8's the 304/345/392 all are in the same family and look similar, the size is stamped on the passengerside of the block below the head towards the front. Unless its rust free or a 4x4 a 1973 1/2 ton is not worth much.
