Sorry guys, I just have to toot my horn a little. I finally got my trunk floors welded in(1st time doing this). I looked over a bunch of the bead rolling threads and got some experience doing mine. I bought trailer fenders from Tractor Supply Store (9"X32") for $25 each,I still have to weld the extensions from the fenders to the quarters.Under the sheet metal is 1/2"X1/2" square tube frame work.I drilled holes along the tubing and just filled the welds. For a rookie, I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.
Nice work, I love mustang gas tanks. Makes a car more driveable for cheap, and saves time bending tubing to put the filler in the trunk! The idea to use pre-made fenders is brilliant!
If you don't toot your own horn, it aint gonna get tooted! You do nice work, looks great! I wouldn't have thought of the trailer fender idea, thats a good one! And, you got my vote for best tag line of 2009
I just finished a similar tank and trunk installation on a 54 chevy. I used an S-10 filler neck and cap, if you cut it down at the expansion location it will just fit inside the mustang filler neck weld it all the way around. This makes a nice sealed cap so you don't get fumes inside the trunk. I just weld a bung on the neck and bent some fuel line for a vent. Trunk looks real cool.
I wouldn't suggest welding your tubs to the outer skin of the quarter if that was what you were inferring. When the car flexes you will see where the tub is welded to the quarter. Looks good though.
I was thinking of welding them to the quarters, just thought thats what you do. What do you suggest I do? Thanks
Hey poorboy, is that restaurant "Thunderbirds" still open in Escondido? I used to go there when I was stationed at Pendleton. It was a pretty cool place.
Just for future refrence you can get the fenders up to 13" wide. Thats is the widest that I have found anyway. Just go to any place that builds trailers.
