For those of you not using the rear your 28-31 sedan was born with, what did you use? Do to the kick-up I want to put in the frame, it looks like I'll need one rather long (approx. 55''-57'' from backing plate to backing plate). P.S> I'm kinda partial to the Ford 9''.
The only measurement to use is wheel mounting flange to wheel mounting flange. Backing plate measurements vary wildly. My sedan measures 61 1/2, but your mileage may vary. Good luck, -Abone.
I'm going to use an 8" rear end out of a '67 Mustang. It's 59.25" wide from axle flange to axle flange. I'm using 1" thick billet adapters to go from 5x4.5 to 5x5.5 for a total width of 61.25".
Abone, Do you mean the flange the backing plate bolts to? (It's the inside clearance I'm concerned with)
Ive got an early bronco rear in mine but my car is pretty much stock. If your setting your car down low, might want to look into something wider, like a 70's or 80's f150 9".
Nope. The actual spot where the wheel mounts to where the wheel mounts. There are too many varables in backing plates and axle bearing stick outs to measure any other way. The housing end stops at teh bearing mount area, but the axle sticks out farther. That measurement adds to your total width, but varys a great deal. As a side note...if you ever have to order custom axles, you have to know what brakes adn backing plates you are using. The axle wheel mount flange will stick out a certian ammount depending on what brakes you have. 9in Fords should have all been the same, but they weren't. Good luck, -Abone.
The distance between the backing plates is not the only magic number to be considered. When measuring an axle for a channeled car, the distance between the backing plates along with your particular wheel backspacing and tire width are other variables in determining the correct axle width needed.
X2 on what Leaky Pipes said. You need to do a lot of measuring to figure everything out. My A Sedan sits pretty low 3-4" of ground cleance. I'm using a 9" out of a 60" Galaxie. It is 61.5" wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface. This was the widest 9" I could find that still had a center pinion. You can find wider ones but then they have a offset pinion. I center pinion is kinda important when you get the car real low and the driveshaft is running right between the seats. With a offset pinion your passenger seat would have to be smaller. Even with the wide 9" I ran I still couldn't get drum brakes and backing plates to clear the body. I ended up running disc on the rear with the calipers on the bottom side of the axle. I also had to have the wheels made 16x7 with a 2" backspace.
I am using the 8.5/8.8 rear out of a 79 Ford Crown Vic LTD with a locker and Mustang gears. It was about 57" between the backing plates I think (it's been a while since I was measuring it). It fits great with my kicked up rear frame, and 4" channel, and looks like about 3.5" between the inner edge of the rear tire and the body.
What you need to find is a mid 70's ford 9 inch out of an f150 especially if you want your tires to clear the beltline. these are the second widest 9 inch rear available they are a little shorter than vans of the same vintage.
i have a 9''. 58'' backing plate to backing plate. $200 also the drums hang over the backing plates about an 1''
I've got a Chrysler 8 3/4 (narrowed) out of a 70's Dodge Monaco. Sorry, I don't have the measurements on it.
